Highlights

Where the gearing changes

MicroModule II uses more, smaller gear teeth so more of them are engaged at once. The result is a retrieve with no detectable grain to it - the thing people notice first on an Ultegra.

CI4+ body

Carbon-reinforced composite - as rigid as metal at a fraction of the weight, and it cannot corrode.

MicroModule II gears

More, finer teeth in mesh at any moment, which is what makes the retrieve feel seamless.

9 kg drag at 225 g

An unusual power-to-weight figure, and the reason this reel suits light tackle with real fish on it.

X-SHIP and X-Protect

Twin-supported pinion for gear efficiency under load, plus water-repellent protection on the line roller.

Product description

About this product

Shimano Ultegra – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The Ultegra is where Shimano range stops being about value and starts being about engineering. Three things change compared with the Sedona below it. The body becomes CI4+, a carbon-reinforced composite that is as rigid as aluminium but much lighter and cannot corrode. The gearing becomes MicroModule II, which uses more and finer teeth so that a greater number are meshed at any instant – that is what removes the faint grain you can feel in a cheaper reel. And X-SHIP supports the pinion gear on bearings at both ends, keeping it aligned with the drive gear even at full drag, which is when cheaper reels start to feel rough.

In the 2500HG that adds up to 225 grams carrying 9 kg of maximum drag, with high gearing at 6.0:1 returning 89 cm per crank. It is a light-tackle reel, but a serious one: fine braid, small lures, and enough drag to stop a fish that a 225 g reel has no business stopping.

SilentDrive tightens the internal tolerances so the reel is quiet and feels solid in the hand, and X-Protect gives water-repellent protection at the line roller. It is not a sealed SW-series reel, so it is an inshore and freshwater tool rather than an offshore one – rinse it after sea use.

Shimano also build the Ultegra in a newer FD generation where the 2500HG is geared slightly lower at 5.8:1 and weighs 215 g. Ask us which generation is in stock if the difference matters to you.

Buying a Shimano Ultegra in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the shimano ultegra at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every shimano ultegra is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which shimano ultegra suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the shimano ultegra are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

What does MicroModule II actually change?

It uses more gear teeth, each finer, so a greater number are in mesh at any moment. Load is spread across more contact points, which removes the slight grain you can feel turning a cheaper reel and keeps it smooth as it wears.

Is CI4+ better than a metal body?

Different rather than better. CI4+ is a carbon-reinforced composite: as rigid as aluminium for the job, far lighter, and it cannot corrode. A metal body is stiffer still under extreme load, which is why the big saltwater reels use it. For a 225 g light-tackle reel, CI4+ is the right answer.

FC or FD generation - which should I buy?

The FD is 10 g lighter at 215 g and geared slightly lower at 5.8:1 (86 cm per crank against 89). Otherwise the drag and capacity are the same. Neither is clearly better; ask us what is in stock.

What can I catch with it around Dar es Salaam?

Light inshore lure fishing - queenfish, barracuda, small trevally, snapper and mullet from a jetty, creek or the rocks. Inland it is an excellent bass, tigerfish and light Nile perch reel.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 6 ft 6 in to 7 ft 3 in light spinning rod rated around 7-28 g. Our Noeby Leisure K4 S704 at 142 g makes a very well-balanced outfit with it.

Is it a saltwater reel?

It carries X-Protect water repellency but it is not a sealed SW-series reel. It is fine inshore with a proper rinse afterwards. For weekly sea fishing buy a Spheros SW.

Braid or mono?

Braid, almost certainly. The high gearing, the AR-C spool and the light-tackle intent all point that way, and fine PE is what lets a 2500 reel hold enough line. Add a fluorocarbon leader.

How do I look after it in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage, and oil the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
