Highlights

The honest first reel

8.5 kg of drag at the opening price point. It is the simplest reel Shimano makes - and it still has their spool and body geometry, which is why it casts better than its price suggests.

8.5 kg maximum drag

A genuinely useful figure at this price - enough for most inshore and freshwater fish.

AR-C spool

Shimano's cast-optimised spool lip, which is the single biggest reason this reel outcasts its rivals.

G-Free body

Moves the centre of gravity closer to the rod, so the outfit balances better and tires your wrist less.

2+1 bearings, 320 g

Simple, serviceable and light enough for all-day use.

About this product

Shimano Fx – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Every reel maker has an opening price point, and the FX is Shimano’s. It is the simplest spinning reel they build – a graphite body and rotor, two ball bearings and a roller, a front drag – and it exists so that someone buying their first reel can buy a real one rather than an anonymous one.

What makes it worth the money over an unbranded reel is the geometry. The AR-C spool has the lip profile Shimano developed to let line leave the spool in smoother coils, which is why an FX casts further than reels costing more. The G-Free body shifts the centre of mass towards the rod, so the outfit balances in the hand instead of hanging off the front. Neither of those costs anything to manufacture; both are the result of Shimano having already worked them out on their expensive reels.

In the 4000 size it gives 8.5 kg of maximum drag, 82 cm of line per crank at 5.2:1, and holds 180 m of 0.30 mm mono or 490 m of PE 1. That is a sensible all-round saltwater and freshwater size: big enough for snapper, queenfish, barracuda and catfish, small enough to cast comfortably all day at 320 g.

The thing to be clear about is what it is not. There is no HAGANE gear, no X-SHIP, no CI4+ body and no water sealing. It is not built for daily offshore use and it will not survive being left wet and salty. Rinse it, dry it, and it will do years of honest work; neglect it and it will not. If you fish the sea every week, step up to the Sedona or Spheros SW.

Buying a Shimano Fx in Dar es Salaam

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the shimano fx at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every shimano fx is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which shimano fx suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Tanzania.

Spare parts and replacements for the shimano fx are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

What can I catch with a 4000 size reel here?

It is the most useful single size on this coast. Snapper, queenfish, barracuda, small trevally and kingfish from a jetty, the rocks or a boat; catfish, tilapia and Nile perch inland. Pair it with a 7 ft to 9 ft rod.

Is it suitable for sea fishing?

For occasional inshore use, yes, provided you rinse it properly afterwards. It has no water sealing, so it is not the reel for fishing the sea every week - the Sedona 8000FI or Spheros SW are built for that.

What is the difference between this and the Sienna 4000?

Mechanically almost nothing: same ratio, same retrieve, same drag, same weight, same capacities. The Sienna has one extra ball bearing (3+1 against 2+1). That is the whole difference, and it is reflected in the price.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each new release (FC, FE, FI, FJ and so on). A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool - a C3000 is a 3000 spool on a 2500 body. HG means high gear, XG extra-high gear, PG power gear, and S a shallow spool.

Should I use mono or braid on it?

Braid, if you are lure fishing - it casts further, has no stretch so you feel bites, and the 490 m of PE 1 this spool holds is far more than you will ever need. Mono is fine and cheaper for bait fishing, and more forgiving of a sudden lunge at the boat.

Is the handle reversible?

Yes. The handle unscrews and fits either side, so left- and right-handed anglers use the same reel.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and put a drop of reel oil on the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips. Neglected salt is what kills reels here, far more than use does.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, we ship nationwide. Tell us your location and we will quote transport.
