Highlights

A real Yonex at a club price

The step from a steel-shafted starter racket to a full carbon frame is the biggest single improvement most players ever feel. The Attack 9 is where that step is affordable - a genuine graphite Yonex with an Isometric head, built in India rather than Japan.

Full carbon frame and shaft

The real jump from a steel or aluminium starter racket - lighter, faster and far more responsive.

Isometric head

Yonex-s squared head shape, which enlarges the sweet spot compared with a conventional oval.

Built-in T-Joint

The frame and shaft joined as one piece rather than glued, for a more solid, quieter feel.

4U G4, Hi-Flex

80-84 g unstrung on a mid-size grip, with a flexible shaft that loads at club swing speeds.

Product description

About this product

Yonex Astrox Attack – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The Astrox Attack 9 is part of Yonex-s India-built range, and that is the honest way to describe it: a genuine Yonex racket, made in India rather than Japan or Taiwan, priced for club players.

What you are buying is the step from aluminium or steel to carbon. That change is the biggest single improvement most players ever feel in a racket – a carbon frame is lighter, gets to the shuttle faster, transmits far more of what is happening at the string bed to your hand, and does not bend permanently when it clips the floor.

The Isometric head is Yonex-s squared-off shape. On a traditional oval head the main strings are much longer in the centre than at the edges, so the sweet spot is a narrow oval. Squaring the head evens the string lengths and widens the sweet spot considerably – it is the single most useful thing Yonex ever patented and it is on almost everything they make.

The built-in T-joint is the connection between shaft and frame formed as one piece rather than being a separate glued part. It feels more solid, it is quieter, and it is one less thing to fail.

On balance, be aware that sources disagree: Yonex-s own specification lists this racket as head-light, while some retailers who have weighed it describe it as head-heavy. We have not weighed one ourselves, so we quote Yonex and flag the disagreement rather than pick a side.

Questions

Good to know

Is the balance head-light or head-heavy?

Yonex publish it as head-light. At least one specialist retailer who has measured the racket reports head-heavy. We have not weighed one, so we quote Yonex and flag the disagreement - if the balance matters to your game, ask us to check the stock before you order.

Why is the maximum tension 27 lb when some sites say 32?

Because 32 lb is not a Yonex figure. It appears on some Indian marketplace listings and stringing a frame to it will damage it. Yonex publish 20-27 lb for this racket and that is the figure to string to.

Is a racket made in India a lesser Yonex?

It is a different factory, not a different company - Yonex build in Japan, Taiwan, China and India, and the India-built range is how they reach club players at a sensible price. The frame is genuine carbon and the Isometric head is the real thing.

What does Isometric actually do?

It squares off the head so the main strings are closer to equal length across the face. On a traditional oval head the strings at the edges are much shorter and stiffer, which shrinks the sweet spot. Squaring it widens the usable area noticeably.

What string tension should I ask for?

Lower than you think, and never above the maximum printed on the frame. Club players here are usually best between 22 and 24 lb - lower tension gives a bigger sweet spot and more power for less effort. High tension only pays off if you already generate your own power, and it breaks strings and frames faster in this heat.

What does the grip size G4 or G5 mean?

It is the circumference of the handle. G5 is the smallest commonly sold, G4 one size larger. A grip can always be built up with an overgrip, so if you are between sizes take the smaller one - you cannot shrink a handle that is too big.

How often should a racket be restrung?

The old rule is to restring as many times a year as you play per week. Strings also lose tension sitting unused, and heat and humidity here speed that up - a racket strung six months ago has softened whether you played on it or not.

How should I look after a racket in this climate?

Keep it out of a hot car. Heat is what destroys rackets here - it softens the resin in the graphite and cooks the string tension out. Store it in a cover, out of direct sun, and never leave it in a boot all afternoon.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?
