Highlights

Take the legs out of it

A pull buoy held between the thighs floats your legs, so you cannot kick. Everything then depends on your arms - which is exactly how you find out what your stroke is really doing.

Floats the legs

Held between the thighs, it lifts the legs so you swim with your arms alone.

Builds upper body strength

Pull sets are how swimmers develop arm and back strength in the water.

Exposes stroke faults

Without a kick to hide behind, any weakness in the catch shows up immediately.

Dense closed-cell foam

Durable, buoyant and it does not waterlog.

Product description

About this product

A pull buoy is a piece of shaped foam held between the thighs. It floats the legs, which means you cannot kick, which means every metre you cover comes from your arms. That single change does three things at once.

It builds upper-body strength, because pull sets load the arms, shoulders and back far harder than normal swimming. It exposes stroke faults, because without a kick to carry you, any weakness in your catch or your body position shows up immediately. And it teaches body position, because a floated leg shows you what a level body actually feels like.

Almost every structured swim session includes pull work for those reasons, and a pull buoy is the cheapest piece of equipment that genuinely changes how you swim.

Using one is simple: hold it between your upper thighs and squeeze gently, then swim front crawl without kicking at all. It will feel awkward for the first hundred metres, particularly if you rely on your kick more than you realise – which is the point.

The foam is dense and closed cell, so it does not waterlog. Rinse it after every session and keep it out of direct sun; chlorine and UV are what make foam go chalky and crumble.

Questions

Good to know

What is a pull buoy for?

Floating your legs so you cannot kick. Everything then comes from the arms, which builds upper-body strength, exposes stroke faults and teaches you what a level body position feels like.

How do I use it?

Hold it between your upper thighs, squeeze gently, and swim front crawl without kicking. It feels awkward for the first hundred metres, especially if you rely on your kick more than you realise.

Can I use it to learn to swim?

It is a training aid for people who can already swim, not a flotation device for learners. For a child or an adult learning, use armbands, a float vest or a kickboard with supervision.

Pull buoy or kickboard - what is the difference?

Opposite jobs. A pull buoy floats the legs so you train the arms; a kickboard floats the arms so you train the legs. A structured session usually includes both.

Will it hold me up if I stop?

Partly, and only at the legs. It is not a buoyancy aid and should never be treated as one - it is not a life-saving device.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, for children who already swim and are working on technique. It is not a learner float.

Why does my back hurt during pull sets?

Usually because the hips are sinking or the buoy is too far down the legs. Hold it high, between the upper thighs, and keep the core engaged - the buoy floats you, it does not arch you.

How do I look after foam training aids?

Rinse in fresh water after every session and dry in the shade. Chlorine and UV both break down closed-cell foam - a board left on a sunny poolside all summer will go chalky and crumble at the edges. Store it out of the sun.
