There are two reasons to wear a swim cap and both are practical. The first is drag: a head of loose hair moving through water creates far more resistance than people expect, which is why every competitive swimmer wears one. The second is hair: chlorine strips the natural oils out of hair, and over a season of regular swimming the difference between capped and uncapped is obvious.
This is the Pro Series cap – a close, tailored fit designed to sit snug and stay put through a session, including tumble turns and open-water swimming where a loose cap simply comes off.
A tip that helps with chlorine more than the cap alone: wet your hair thoroughly with fresh water before you get in. Hair already saturated with clean water absorbs far less pool water, and the cap then keeps most of the rest out.
Putting it on is easier wet than dry. Hold the cap open with both hands inside, thumbs at the front, roll it on from the forehead backwards and tuck the hair in at the back last.
Rinse it in fresh water after every swim, turn it inside out to dry, and never leave it screwed up wet in a bag.
