Fit matters more than most people expect. The band should be tight enough that it does not slide down past the elbow when the arm is lifted, and loose enough not to mark the skin. Inflate to firm but not drum-hard: an over-inflated band splits at the seam, and PVC that has been sitting in a hot car expands further when it hits cool pool water.
Arm bands are a confidence aid, not a safety device. They keep a child upright in a supervised pool. They are not built for the sea, where a current or a wave will take a child faster than a float can hold them, and they can slip off a wet arm.
