About this product

Most hard-shell rooftop tents sleep two, which is fine until there are four of you. This one is built at family capacity – a four-person hard shell with a moulded ABS top that opens quickly and closes streamlined.

ABS is the standard material for moulded rooftop shells and it earns its place: it sheds rain without seams to leak, it resists UV in a way that matters under equatorial sun, and it takes the branches and grit of a rough track without complaint. Closed, the profile stays low and smooth, which keeps wind noise and fuel consumption in check.

Inside, the tent body is 280 g polycotton ripstop canvas rated to 2,000 mm, under a 420D ripstop polyoxford fly rated to 3,000 mm. With four people breathing in a small space overnight, the canvas is doing real work – it breathes, so moisture moves out instead of condensing on the walls, which is exactly where an all-synthetic tent of this size struggles on the Tanzanian coast. A high-density sponge mattress comes fitted, and there is an aluminium telescopic ladder for access.

Before ordering, talk to us about your rack. A four-person tent is the heaviest thing most people put on a roof, and its weight plus four sleeping occupants has to sit inside your rack’s dynamic and static load ratings. We would rather check that with you than sell you something that does not work.

Good to know

Will it fit my vehicle?

A rooftop tent mounts to roof rack crossbars or a rack tray, not to the roof panel, so what matters is your rack and its load rating rather than the badge on the car. Send us a photograph of your roof setup and its rated capacity and we will tell you honestly whether it will work - and if it will not, we will say so.

What about dynamic and static load ratings?

Your rack has a dynamic rating for driving and a higher static rating for standing still. The tent's weight must sit inside the dynamic figure; the tent plus the people sleeping in it sits inside the static figure. Ask us and we will weigh the tent and work it through with you before you buy.

Does it really sleep four?

Two adults and two children comfortably, or four adults at close quarters. If it is four adults regularly, consider this tent plus a ground tent rather than squeezing everyone up top.

How does ABS compare with an aluminium honeycomb shell?

ABS is a moulded shell - tough, seamless and good value. Aluminium honeycomb is stiffer for its weight, which matters most when you are close to your rack's load limit. Both shed weather equally well.

Will four people cause condensation?

Much less than in an all-synthetic tent, because the 280 g polycotton canvas breathes. Open the vents at both ends before sleeping and it stays comfortable even on a humid night.

Is sleeping on the roof actually better in Tanzania?

It is why they are popular here. You are off the ground and away from insects, water running through a camp site and anything walking past, you get a breeze on a hot night, and you can pitch on ground too rough or wet for a normal tent - a stony riverbed, a muddy patch, a roadside.

How long does it take to open?

A couple of minutes. There is no cover to unzip and stow and no fabric folding, which is the main practical advantage of a hard shell over a soft one.

How much does it weigh?

The supplier does not publish a weight for this model. Ask us and we will weigh it in Dar es Salaam - with a four-person tent that figure decides whether your rack can take it.
