Highlights

The right size is the whole point

A child given a full-size ball cannot get a hand around it, so they push it with two hands from the chest instead of shooting. That habit is very hard to undo later. A size 5 ball lets a young player learn a real shooting form from the start.

Size 5, 27.5 in

The youth size - what FIBA specify for mini-basketball, for roughly ages 8 to 11.

All Surface Cover

Rubber, built for both indoor floors and outdoor courts.

Deep channel construction

Wide grooves between panels for grip and control in a smaller hand.

Pressure Lock bladder

Better air retention, so it stays playable between pump-ups.

Product description

About this product

The Gamebreaker is Wilson-s rubber all-surface ball, and this is the size 5 version at 27.5 inches – the youth size.

Size matters more for young players than any other property of a ball. A size 7 ball is 29.5 inches around and weighs about 22 ounces; a child of nine cannot spread a hand across it or control it with one hand. What they do instead is push it from the chest with two hands, which gets the ball to the hoop and teaches a shooting form they will have to unlearn. On a properly sized ball a young player can hold it in the shooting hand, guide with the other, and learn the real motion immediately.

FIBA specify the size 5 ball for mini-basketball, and Wilson-s own guidance puts it at roughly ages 8 to 11. Wilson-s regional charts differ slightly on the age band – their Australian chart says 8 to 11 and their US one says 8 and under – so treat it as a guide and judge by the child-s hand.

The all-surface rubber cover means it works indoors and out, which is the sensible specification for a child-s ball. It is going to be used in a driveway, at school, on a court and on a tiled veranda, and a rubber cover handles all of it.

Deep channels and a pressure-lock bladder complete it: grip from the grooves, and air retention that means a parent is not pumping it up every week.

Questions

Good to know

What basketball size do I need?

Size 7 (29.5 in) is the mens and adult ball. Size 6 (28.5 in) is the womens ball and suits youth from about 12. Size 5 (27.5 in) is the youth ball, roughly ages 8 to 11, and is what FIBA specify for mini-basketball. Sizes 4 and 3 are childrens balls and are not FIBA sizes at all.

How do I know if the ball is the right size for my child?

Have them hold it in one hand at the side. If they cannot control it without the second hand supporting from underneath, the ball is too big. A ball that is slightly too small is far less harmful than one that is too big.

Is it indoor or outdoor?

Both. Wilson state it is designed for indoor and outdoor use, which is the right specification for a child-s ball - it will be used on a driveway, at school and on a court without anyone thinking about surfaces.

How hard should a basketball be inflated?

Drop it from shoulder height onto a hard floor - a correctly inflated ball bounces back to about hip height. Check it every few weeks. Most balls that feel dead are simply soft, and playing on a soft ball is how you learn a bad shooting touch.

When should a child move up a size?

Roughly at 12, or when they can comfortably control the next size up in one hand. Moving up too early is the commonest mistake and it costs a player their shooting form.

Will an outdoor ball last on a tarmac court?

Longer than any indoor ball, which is the point. A rubber cover is built to be dragged across concrete and tarmac; a composite or leather indoor ball is destroyed by the same surface in weeks. If your court is outdoors, buy a rubber ball and nothing else.

How should I look after a ball in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not playing, and out of a hot car. Heat raises the internal pressure and ages the cover and the bladder. Wipe the dust off after playing outdoors - grit ground into the surface is what wears the grip channels smooth.
