Highlights

The hole is doing two jobs

An open patella design takes direct pressure off the kneecap, which matters if that is where it hurts. It also locates the support: the opening sits over the kneecap and stops the whole thing migrating down the leg, which is what closed sleeves do within twenty minutes of running.

Open patella

No direct pressure on the kneecap, and the opening anchors the support in place.

Compression around the joint

Even pressure on the soft tissue either side, which is where the support actually acts.

Stays put

Closed sleeves slide down the leg during running. The patella opening stops that.

For loaded activity

Running, lifting, hiking and court sports, where a knee gets repeated impact.

Product description

About this product

This is a knee support with an opening over the kneecap – the most common style of knee sleeve and, for most people, the right one.

The opening does two things. It keeps direct pressure off the patella, which matters a great deal if your pain is at the front of the knee, over or around the kneecap. And it locates the support: a closed sleeve on a tapered thigh will work its way down the leg within a few minutes of running, taking its compression with it, while an opening that sits over the kneecap holds the whole thing in position.

What the support itself does is compression, warmth and feedback. It is not mechanically stabilising your knee – a fabric sleeve cannot resist the forces a knee handles when you land from a jump. What it can do is help swelling settle, keep the joint warm, and give you a continuous sense of where the knee is, which changes how you move in a way most people find genuinely helpful.

Front-of-knee pain – the ache under or around the kneecap when you go downstairs, squat or run – is extremely common and usually comes from how load is distributed rather than from damage in the knee itself. Hip and thigh strength, running volume and footwear all feed into it. A support makes it more comfortable; strengthening work is what resolves it.

A knee that gives way, locks, or swells significantly after activity is a different matter. That needs assessment rather than a sleeve.

Questions

Good to know

Open or closed patella - which should I buy?

Open, for most people. It keeps pressure off the kneecap and it stops the sleeve sliding down your leg. A closed sleeve is preferred by some lifters who want even compression across the whole joint and are not moving enough for it to migrate.

Will it help pain at the front of my knee?

With the symptoms, yes. Front-of-knee pain usually comes from how load is being distributed rather than from damage inside the joint, and hip and thigh strengthening is what resolves it. A support makes the knee comfortable while you do that work.

Does a knee support stabilise the knee?

Not mechanically. Fabric cannot resist the forces a knee handles landing from a jump. What it does is compression, warmth and constant feedback about where the joint is, which changes how you move. That is real and useful, and it is not the same as stability.

Will a support fix an injury?

No. A support manages symptoms - it adds compression, warmth and a constant reminder of where the joint is, and for some conditions it redistributes load away from a sore tendon. It does not repair tissue and it does not address why the injury happened. Persistent pain, swelling that will not settle, or a joint that gives way needs a doctor or a physiotherapist, not a longer-lasting brace.

How tight should it be?

Snug, not tight. You should be able to slide a finger under the edge. If the skin beyond it tingles, goes cold, changes colour or swells, it is too tight - take it off and re-fit it looser. A support that cuts off circulation does more harm than the problem it was bought for.

How long should I wear it each day?

During the activity that provokes the symptoms, and not much beyond it. Wearing a support all day every day lets the muscles around the joint do less work, and weaker muscles mean a less stable joint over time. Use it to keep training while you fix the underlying problem, not instead of fixing it.

How do I get the size right?

Measure the limb rather than guessing from your clothing size, and measure where the support will actually sit. Tell us the measurement and we will match it to the stock. A support one size too big does nothing at all, and one size too small restricts circulation.

How do I wash it in this climate?

Hand wash in cool water with a little mild soap, rinse well and dry flat in the shade - never in a machine on hot, never in a tumble dryer, and never in direct sun. Neoprene and elastic both perish with heat. Wash it often: in Dar es Salaam humidity a support worn twice and left in a bag starts to smell within days.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
