Highlights

Made for 10-speed

One chain across all three major derailleur systems.

Fits all three systems

Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo 10-speed alike.

Ti-N, not gold plate

The gold finish is a titanium nitride hardness coating. The colour is a by-product.

KMC's anti-rust finish is the one to pick if the bike lives near the ocean.

Shifts under load

X-Bridge chamfering, so the chain climbs sprockets when you are pushing.

Product description

About this product

The KMC X10 covers 10-speed drivetrains across Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo – a wide brief, and one KMC handle by designing the X-Series around all three rather than copying any single one.

At 273 g and 116 links it sits neatly between the X9 and the X11. The X-Bridge shaping – chamfered plates inside and out – is what makes the chain climb between sprockets under load rather than clattering, and High Pin Power riveting is KMC’s pin-retention process.

The X10 is offered in more finishes than the chains either side of it: grey, nickel plate and black, Ti Gold, Aurora, and EPT. Two of those are worth understanding. The gold is a titanium nitride surface coating, not gold plating – Ti-N is a hardness treatment used on cutting tools, and the colour is a by-product of the chemistry rather than the point of it. EPT is KMC’s EcoProteQ anti-rust treatment, which is the finish to choose if the bike lives anywhere near the ocean.

Supplied over-length and sized to your drivetrain at fitting.

Questions

Good to know

How do I know how many speeds my bike has?

Count the sprockets on the rear cassette. That number is the speed count - eight sprockets means an 8-speed chain. The number of chainrings at the front does not change it. If in doubt send us a photo of the cassette.

Is the gold chain actually gold?

No, and that is a good thing. The gold colour comes from a titanium nitride surface coating - the same hard wear treatment used on cutting tools. It is applied for hardness, and the colour is simply what Ti-N looks like.

What is EPT?

KMC's EcoProteQ anti-rust coating. If your bike lives near the coast or gets rained on regularly, it is the finish worth paying a little more for - salt air goes after an untreated chain quickly.

Do I need to shorten the chain?

Almost certainly. Chains are supplied over-length so they fit the widest range of bikes, and yours must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. You will need a chain tool. If you are not sure how many links to remove, bring the bike to us with the old chain and we will size it against it.

Is a quick link included?

KMC do not state on their own product pages that a connector is packed in the box, and they sell MissingLink connectors as separate items, so we do not claim one is included. Check the packet - and if it is not there, the matching KMC connector is CL555 for 11-speed and CL552 for 12-speed. Ask us and we will confirm before you ride.

How often should I replace a chain?

Measure it rather than guessing - a chain checker costs very little. Replace at around 0.5% stretch for a 11 or 12-speed drivetrain and 0.75% for wider chains. A worn chain left on will wear the cassette and chainrings to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one.

Will it last in Tanzanian conditions?

Chain life here is set by cleaning, not by brand. Fine dust bound into chain lube becomes an abrasive paste, and that paste is what wears the rollers and pins. Clean and re-lube regularly and a chain lasts as it should; neglect it and no chain will.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
