Wide-gap worm hooks are one of those pieces of tackle whose reason for existing is easy to miss. Rig a fat soft plastic on a normal hook and the bait fills the gap; when a fish crushes it, the point has to travel through the whole thickness of the plastic before it reaches the jaw, and usually it does not get there. A wide gap leaves the clearance that makes the hook-up possible.

This hook carries Mustad UltraPoint, their three-stage Opti-Angle sharpening process, which removes less metal from the point than conventional grinding – so it starts sharper and, more usefully, stays sharp rather than rolling over after a few contacts with rock.

It is rigged the standard weedless way: point into the nose of the bait, out through the side, bait slid up to the eye, then the hook rotated and the point buried just under the surface of the plastic. Done properly it comes through weed, timber and coral rubble cleanly.
