On an ordinary single hook the eye is turned out of the plane of the point; hung under a lure, it cocks to one side and the lure swims crooked. An inline hook has the eye in the same plane, so it hangs true and the lure keeps its action.

The 8095-5X is Noeby inline replacement single. It is 5X – built on the wire normally used for a hook five sizes larger – forged through the bend for stiffness, in high carbon steel with a corrosion-resistant coating.

What does inline mean on a single hook?

The eye lies in the same plane as the point and the bend. Hung under a lure it therefore hangs straight instead of cocking to one side, which is what lets the lure keep swimming correctly. On an ordinary single it does not.

What does 5X or 6X strength mean?

The X number compares the wire to the standard for that hook size. A 6X hook is built on the wire normally used for a hook six sizes larger. It is far harder to open out under heavy drag, at the cost of needing more force to drive the point home - which is why heavy hooks belong on heavy tackle.

Why replace trebles with singles?

One strong point instead of three weak ones, far less fouling of the leader and lure, much easier unhooking, and far less damage to a released fish - or to your own hands. It is standard on serious saltwater lures.

How many should I fit to a lure?

Usually one on the belly and one at the tail, replacing two trebles. Some anglers fish a single tail hook only on stickbaits, which fouls less still. Point the belly hook forward and the tail hook backward.

Will it change how my lure swims?

Correctly fitted, very little - which is the point of the inline design. A lure that has been re-hooked and now swims oddly usually has the wrong hook weight rather than the wrong type; go a size lighter if so.

Do I need to change the split rings?

Almost always. A 5X hook on a factory ring simply moves the weak point to the ring. Match the ring to the hook and to the drag you intend to fish.

Why upgrade the hooks on a lure at all?

Because they are the cheapest part of the outfit and the part that fails. Factory hooks on most lures are sized for an average fish, not for a GT. Straightened hooks and opened split rings lose far more good fish than broken line does.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse them in fresh water and dry before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Check the point on a thumbnail before every session and replace any hook that will not catch.
