A live-bait hook has a hard job: it has to hold a bait alive and swimming, take a strike from a fish moving at speed, and then survive a fight at drag settings that would open an ordinary hook. The Hoodlum is Mustad answer, and the specification that matters is 4X Strong – the hook is built on the wire normally used for a hook four sizes larger.

Everything else follows. The wire is forged, which flattens it slightly in the bend and stiffens it against opening. The steel is Nor-Tempered, Mustad three-stage Norwegian heat treatment that they state increases strength by up to 30 per cent. The point is their Opti-Angle needle point with 4.3 UltraPoint – sharpened in three stages in a way that removes less metal, so it starts sharp and stays sharp rather than rolling over.

What does 4X Strong actually mean?

The hook is made on the wire diameter normally used for a hook four sizes larger. So a 5/0 4X Strong hook uses the wire of a standard 9/0. It bends far less under heavy drag, at the cost of needing a bit more force to drive the point home.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so the point is sharper and - more importantly - stays sharp for longer instead of rolling over on the first piece of coral. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint, meaning the point length is 4.3 times the wire diameter.

What does Nor-Tempered mean?

Mustad three-stage computer-controlled heat treatment, done in Norway. It gives the steel a fine-grained microstructure, which Mustad state increases hook strength by up to 30 per cent over conventional tempering. It is the reason a Mustad hook of a given wire gauge bends less than a cheaper one.

How do I set a J hook?

Actively. Unlike a circle hook, a J hook needs a firm sweep or lift of the rod the moment you feel the fish. Do not wait - a J hook that is not set will fall out.
