Highlights

The pack you carry, not the one porters do

Forty-five litres holds layers, water, a camera and a sleeping bag - which is what a Kilimanjaro climber actually has on their back.

45 litres

A weekend's kit, or everything you carry yourself on a supported climb. Enough without becoming a load in its own right.

1.2 kg empty

Light for the capacity, so the pack is not spending your carrying budget before you have put anything in it.

Breathable back panel

Airflow between you and the pack, which on a humid Tanzanian ascent is what stops your back being soaked by the first rest stop.

Integrated rain cover

Built in, not an accessory. Out and over the pack in seconds when the afternoon turns.

Product description

About this product

Black is the default for good reason on a pack this size. A 45 litre pack does double duty – trail at the weekend, travel bag during the week – and black is the finish that suits both and still looks right after a season of dust and airport handling.

Forty-five litres is the honest weekend size. It takes a sleeping bag, a mat, a change of clothes, food for two or three days and the things you need during the day, and at 1.2 kg empty it does not cost you much of your carrying budget to own. It is also small enough to be a sensible cabin-sized travel bag, which is not true of anything larger.

The fabric is high-density nylon – light for its toughness – and a rain cover is built in for weather the coating cannot handle alone. The back panel is breathable with padded shoulder straps, and there are adjustable chest and waist straps to stabilise the load. On a 45 litre pack the waist strap is doing a real job: at this weight it stops the pack swaying as you move rather than only transferring weight.

Inside there is a large main compartment with multiple storage pockets, so the water bottle, the torch and the first aid kit are not at the bottom under a sleeping bag. That layout is what makes a pack pleasant to live out of rather than merely capable of holding things.

It measures 65 x 32 x 22 cm. It suits weekend hikes, overnight camping, Kilimanjaro and Meru where porters carry the camp gear, and travel where one bag has to do everything. For trips longer than three days carrying everything yourself, look at the 55 litre.

Questions

Good to know

Is 45 litres enough for Kilimanjaro?

For most people, yes. Porters carry the camp gear, so your own pack holds layers, water, snacks, a camera and a rain shell. 45 litres covers that comfortably with room for a sleeping bag.

How many nights will it cover carrying everything myself?

Two or three, carrying your own sleeping bag, mat, food and a small stove. Beyond that the 55 litre is the size to move up to.

Can I use it as a travel bag?

Yes, and it is a good one. At 65 x 32 x 22 cm it works as a carry-on with most airlines, though cabin size limits vary - check your airline before relying on it.

How do I fit it?

Tighten the waist strap first on the top of your hip bones, then the shoulder straps, then the chest strap. On a pack this size the waist strap mainly stops the pack swaying. Come to the showroom and we will fit it loaded.

Is the rain cover included?

Yes, integrated. The nylon is water resistant on its own, but in real rain the cover is what keeps a sleeping bag dry.

Is it too small for a family camping trip?

For one person's clothing and sleeping kit it is right. For a family, one larger pack or a duffel plus daypacks works better - come in and we will help you plan it.

Will it take a water bladder?

Tell us before you order and we will check the bladder opening on the pack in stock. We keep bladders in Dar es Salaam either way.

Do you deliver upcountry?

Yes, we ship across Tanzania including Moshi and Arusha for Kilimanjaro climbs. Message us with your town for cost and timing.
