About this product
Black is the default for good reason on a pack this size. A 45 litre pack does double duty – trail at the weekend, travel bag during the week – and black is the finish that suits both and still looks right after a season of dust and airport handling.
Forty-five litres is the honest weekend size. It takes a sleeping bag, a mat, a change of clothes, food for two or three days and the things you need during the day, and at 1.2 kg empty it does not cost you much of your carrying budget to own. It is also small enough to be a sensible cabin-sized travel bag, which is not true of anything larger.
The fabric is high-density nylon – light for its toughness – and a rain cover is built in for weather the coating cannot handle alone. The back panel is breathable with padded shoulder straps, and there are adjustable chest and waist straps to stabilise the load. On a 45 litre pack the waist strap is doing a real job: at this weight it stops the pack swaying as you move rather than only transferring weight.
Inside there is a large main compartment with multiple storage pockets, so the water bottle, the torch and the first aid kit are not at the bottom under a sleeping bag. That layout is what makes a pack pleasant to live out of rather than merely capable of holding things.
It measures 65 x 32 x 22 cm. It suits weekend hikes, overnight camping, Kilimanjaro and Meru where porters carry the camp gear, and travel where one bag has to do everything. For trips longer than three days carrying everything yourself, look at the 55 litre.
