Product description

About this product

The HC60 UHE is built around efficiency rather than raw output. Six ultra-high-efficiency LEDs give 1,600 lumens at 6,000K with a 157-metre throw, and because UHE LEDs draw so little for the light they produce, a single 4,000 mAh 18650 cell runs the lamp for up to 200 hours at its lowest level.

An auxiliary red light with two brightness settings sits alongside, for preserving night vision and for moving around a camp without lighting everyone up. Five white levels and three special modes are controlled by two buttons that differ in shape and feel, so they can be told apart by touch with one hand.

The battery is a standard replaceable 18650, so a spare gets you through a long trip. The bracket is removable, letting the body work as a hand torch.

Questions

Good to know

Is the battery really replaceable?

Yes, and that is the main reason to choose this over a sealed lamp. It takes a standard 18650. Carry a charged spare and you can swap in the dark rather than waiting on a charger.

What is the red light for?

Two things. It keeps your own eyes adjusted to the dark, so you can still see once you switch off, and it does not wake the tent or draw as many insects as white light does.

Does it attract insects?

Any light does, and near the coast in the evening a white headlamp will collect everything flying. The red mode is noticeably better, and a lower white level is better than a high one.

Can I use it without the headband?

Yes, the bracket is removable and the body works as a hand torch. That is useful when you want to hand someone the light rather than your head.

Is it comfortable for long wear?

At 140 g complete it is heavier than a minimal lamp, which is the cost of a full-size cell. The top strap is supplied for exactly that reason; use it if you are wearing it for hours.

Will it cope with rain and sweat?

IP68 to 2 metres. Rain, sweat and a dropped lamp in a puddle are all fine. Dry the port before charging.

What charging does it need?

USB-C, into the lamp. Any phone charger, power bank or USB solar panel works, which matters when the grid is off.
