About this product

The UT27 is a running lamp rather than a camping lamp, and the difference shows in the beam. Two quad-core MCT UHE LEDs behind a faceted dual-lens system throw a wide, soft flood with no hard hotspot, which is what stops the light bouncing with every stride. Maximum output is 800 lumens with a 168-metre throw.

Three colour temperatures are selectable: 3,000K warm at CRI 97, 4,500K neutral at CRI 83 and 6,500K cool at CRI 73. Red auxiliary lights run constant or slow-flashing as a warning to traffic. The head tilts through 90 degrees.

The HLB1500 rechargeable pack has a USB-C port built in, the battery compartment glows in the dark so it can be found and changed in the dark, and three AAA cells will run the lamp when the pack is empty. This one is the yellow version, which is the easier of the two to spot in a kit bag.

Good to know

Why does a running headlamp need three colour temperatures?

Because the ground changes. Warm 3,000K at CRI 97 shows roots, rocks and wet patches with real contrast and throws less glare back off dust or rain. Cool 6,500K looks brightest on open road. You pick per run rather than per lamp.

What is CRI and does it matter at night?

Colour rendering index: how faithfully a light shows colour. At CRI 97 a wet rock and a dry one look different; at CRI 73 they both look grey. On technical ground that difference is what stops you turning an ankle.

Will it bounce while I run?

The dual-lens system spreads the beam wide rather than into a tight hotspot, which is what makes a bouncing lamp unbearable. At 74 g with the battery at the front there is very little mass to swing.

What are the red lights for?

Being seen. On the Coco Beach road or any shared road at dawn, a slow-flashing red behind you is the difference between being noticed and not.

Can I run it on AAA batteries?

Yes, three of them, which is the get-home option when the HLB1500 pack is flat. Output and runtime drop compared with the pack.

How long does it last?

Up to 14 and a half hours on the lowest setting. For a typical early-morning run on a mid level you are charging it once a week.

Is it waterproof enough for the rains?

It is built to be run in rain and sweat. Dry it afterwards, keep the battery compartment closed, and do not submerge it.

Can I fly with the battery?

Spare lithium cells and power banks must travel in your cabin bag and are not allowed in checked luggage - that is a firm rule on every airline out of Julius Nyerere, not a preference. Protect the terminals so nothing can short against keys or coins: keep the cell in its case, in the original packaging, or tape the contacts. A cell installed in the light itself may go either way, though the cabin is still the safer choice. Capacity limits only bite above 100 Wh, and a 21700 or 18650 cell is nowhere near that - roughly 13 to 18 Wh - so no airline approval is needed.
