Anyone who owns more than one flashlight ends up with a drawer of cells in different sizes and states. The UM2 is the charger that sorts that out: two slots, each controlled independently, with an LCD that reports voltage, current, charged capacity and elapsed time for each one.

It detects the chemistry and the state of what you put in, then selects the appropriate voltage and charging mode automatically, switching between constant current, constant voltage and negative delta V as needed. Input is over USB with QC 2.0 support, up to 18 W, which is what allows 1,500 mA into a single slot.

It covers IMR, Li-ion and LiFePO4 cells from 10440 through 26700, and NiMH and NiCd in AA, AAA, AAAA, C and D.

Questions

Good to know

Will it charge my 21700 cells?

Yes, including 21700, 20700, 26650 and everything down to 10440. It also takes AA and AAA NiMH cells, which is what makes it useful beyond flashlights.

Does it come with a power supply?

The charger takes a USB input. Use a good 5V/2A or QC 2.0 phone charger; a weak plug will charge at a fraction of the speed.

Can I charge two different cells at once?

Yes, and that is the point of independent slots. An 18650 and a AAA can charge side by side at different rates.

What does the display tell me?

Voltage, charging current, capacity put in and elapsed time, per slot. It is how you find out that an old cell is only taking half of what it used to.

Is it safe to leave charging overnight?

It terminates automatically when each cell is full and has reverse polarity and short circuit protection. Even so, charge lithium cells on a hard surface away from bedding and paper, as you would any charger.

Can I run it from a solar panel or a power bank?

Yes, any USB source. Output will be limited by what the source can supply, so a small panel will be slow.

Which cells will it NOT charge?

It excludes LiFePO4 and 3.8 V Li-ion cells from automatic mode selection. If you are running those, set expectations accordingly or ask us.

Can I fly with the battery?

Spare lithium cells and power banks must travel in your cabin bag and are not allowed in checked luggage - that is a firm rule on every airline out of Julius Nyerere, not a preference. Protect the terminals so nothing can short against keys or coins: keep the cell in its case, in the original packaging, or tape the contacts. A cell installed in the light itself may go either way, though the cabin is still the safer choice. Capacity limits only bite above 100 Wh, and a 21700 or 18650 cell is nowhere near that - roughly 13 to 18 Wh - so no airline approval is needed.
