Highlights

Eighteen panels, laid on not stitched

Stitched volleyballs have raised seams you feel on every dig. A pasted 18-panel ball has the panels laminated onto the carcass instead, so the surface is nearly flat and the ball comes off the forearms cleanly and predictably. It is the construction serious volleyballs use.

18-panel pasted construction

Panels laminated rather than stitched, for a smoother surface and a truer flight.

Nova Soft PU cover

A soft, dimpled grain that is kind to the forearms over a long session.

Butyl thread-wound bladder

Holds air well and keeps the ball round.

Indoor and outdoor

Nivia position it for competitive play on both surfaces.

Product description

About this product

Nivia Volleyball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The G-2020 is Nivia-s 18-panel volleyball in Nova Soft PU, built as a pasted rather than a stitched ball.

That construction difference is the one worth understanding. On a stitched ball, panels are sewn together and the seams stand slightly proud of the surface. You feel them on a dig, and they make the ball come off the forearms a little unpredictably. On a pasted ball the panels are laminated onto a wound carcass, so the surface sits almost flat. The ball plays truer and hurts less, which over two hours of digging is not a small matter.

Eighteen panels rather than the traditional eighteen-in-six-groups arrangement gives a more uniform surface, and combined with the soft dimpled PU grain it makes the ball predictable off the platform and comfortable to receive.

The butyl bladder is thread-wound, which is what keeps a ball round and holds pressure. A cheap ball with a plain bladder goes out of shape within a season and flies off line.

On sizing, ignore the instinct that size 4 means junior. Internationally size 5 is the adult ball and size 4 is a junior one, but Indian manufacturers label their standard adult volleyball size 4 and it measures close to the full 66 cm. Nivia do not publish a circumference for this ball; if the exact measurement matters to you, ask us and we will measure the stock.

Questions

Good to know

Is a size 4 volleyball a junior ball?

Not in this case. Internationally, size 5 is the adult ball (65-67 cm, 260-280 g) and size 4 is a junior one. But Indian manufacturers - Nivia, Cosco, Vector X - label their standard adult volleyball size 4, and it measures close to the full 66 cm. Judge it by circumference rather than by the number on the box.

Is it machine stitched?

No - and some listings get this wrong. It is an 18-panel pasted ball: the panels are laminated onto the carcass rather than sewn. That is the better construction and it is what makes the surface smooth.

Why does pasted construction matter?

Because of your forearms. Stitched seams stand proud and you feel every one on a dig, and they make the ball come off the platform less predictably. A pasted ball is flatter, truer and considerably more comfortable over a long session.

How hard should a volleyball be inflated?

FIVB specify 0.30 to 0.325 kg/cm2, which is about 4.3 to 4.6 psi - considerably softer than a football. An over-inflated volleyball is painful on the forearms and bounces unpredictably off a block. If you have no gauge, press with a thumb: it should give noticeably.

Can I use it outdoors?

Yes, Nivia position it for both. A PU cover handles sand and a hard court, though outdoor play wears any ball faster. Beach volleyball proper uses a different, softer, slightly larger ball - this is a general-purpose one.

What are the exact dimensions?

Nivia do not publish weight or circumference for this model. Rather than repeat a figure we cannot verify, we would rather measure the stock for you - ask us before ordering if it matters.

How should I look after a ball in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not playing, and out of a hot car. Heat raises the internal pressure and ages the cover and the bladder. Wipe the dust off after playing outdoors - grit ground into the surface is what wears the grip channels smooth.
