The weakest point in a big-fish outfit is almost always the knot between the braid and the leader. It has to hold close to the full strength of the line, it has to be slim enough to pass through the rod guides on a cast, and it has to survive being dragged across coral. Very few knots do all three.
The PR knot – often called the GT knot on this coast – does. It works by whipping the braid tightly around the leader in a long, even wrap, then locking it. The result is close to 100 per cent of line strength and slim enough to cast through guides without a hitch.
The catch is that it is very difficult to tie by hand, because the whipping has to be under consistent tension for its whole length. That is what this tool does. The braid spool sits in a bobbin, the tension cap sets the resistance, and you spin the tool around the leader to lay the wraps evenly.
Construction is stainless steel and aluminium alloy – the right materials for a tool that will live in a boat, in salt, and be used with wet hands.
It takes some practice. Sit down with it and some scrap line for half an hour before you need it for real, and then you can re-tie a leader on the water in a few minutes.
