About this product
Every tackle box needs a pair of pliers, and not every pair needs to be a specialist tool. The #101 is the straightforward option: stainless steel throughout, sharp cutters, jaws shaped for pulling hooks, and an ergonomic handle. Nothing more, and for a great many anglers nothing more is needed.
The case for stainless is simple. On this coast the thing that destroys tools is not use, it is salt. An aluminium-bodied plier with steel internals needs rinsing and oiling to stay smooth; a stainless pair is far more forgiving of the trip where you did not get round to it.
What you give up against the more expensive pairs is the tungsten carbide cutters of the 105#, which last far longer on heavy braid, and the curved nose of the 102#, which reaches further into a mouth. If you cut braid all day, buy those. If you want a solid, cheap, corrosion-proof pair that lives in the box, this is it.
Even stainless benefits from a rinse. Salt in the pivot will eventually stiffen any plier – a drop of light oil after a sea trip keeps it working.
