Highlights

Where the fish actually bites

A jigging fish attacks the head of the jig, not the tail. An assist hook on a short cord hangs exactly there - and swings free, so the weight of the jig cannot lever it out.

Single assist, 4/0

One strong point on a free-swinging cord, at the head of the jig.

High carbon steel

Strong and hard, with corrosion resistance for saltwater use.

Improves lure action

Nothing hangs off the tail, so the jig flutters as it was designed to.

Fewer lost fish

A hook on cord cannot be levered out the way a fixed tail hook can.

Product description

About this product

The single biggest improvement most people can make to their jigging is to stop fishing a treble on the tail. Fish do not attack a jig from behind – they take the head, which is why the treble on the tail catches fewer of them and why, when it does hook up, the weight of the jig swinging on it levers the hook out during the fight.

An assist hook fixes both problems. It is a short, strong single tied to a length of braided cord and clipped to the top eye of the jig, so it hangs beside the head where the strike happens. Because it swings free, the jig weight cannot use it as a lever.

There is a third benefit that matters as much: nothing hangs off the tail, so the jig flutters and glides on the drop exactly as its designer intended. A tail treble deadens that fall, and the fall is where most jigging bites come from.

This is a 4/0 single in high carbon steel, suited to medium jigs and lures. Around Dar es Salaam that means the reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles for grouper, snapper, jobfish, kingfish and amberjack.

Questions

Good to know

What is an assist hook?

A short hook tied to a length of braided cord and attached to the top eye of a jig, so it hangs beside the jig head rather than below the tail. Jigging fish attack the head of a jig, so that is where the hook needs to be - and because the hook swings free on cord, it finds the mouth rather than being levered out by the weight of the jig.

Single or twin assist?

A single fouls less and is easier on a released fish; a twin gives you two chances at a hook-up and is the usual choice for bigger fish and heavier jigs. Many people run a twin on jigs over about 150 g and a single below it.

How do I attach it to a jig?

Through the solid ring at the top eye of the jig, usually via a split ring. Make sure the ring is rated for the drag you intend to fish - the ring is often the weakest link in a jigging rig.

How long should the assist cord be?

Short - the hook should hang roughly level with the middle of the jig, no further. Too long and the hook fouls the jig on the drop; too short and it cannot swing into the mouth. Most ready-tied assists are already set correctly for the jig sizes they are sold for.

Should I keep the tail treble as well?

Most experienced jiggers remove it. It catches on the bottom, fouls the assist cord on the drop, and deadens the flutter of the jig. If you keep one, be aware you are trading action for a marginal hook-up gain.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Grouper, snapper, jobfish, kingfish and amberjack on the reef edges, drop-offs and pinnacles, and dogtooth tuna in deeper water.

What size assist do I need?

Match it to the jig, not to the fish - the hook should be roughly a third to a half the length of the jig and hang level with its middle. 4/0 suits medium jigs; tell us your jig weights and we will size it.

How do I look after assist hooks?

Rinse in fresh water and dry them before storage. Check the cord for chafe and fraying after every trip - the cord is the part that fails, not the hook - and retie or replace at the first sign of wear. Check the point on a thumbnail.
