Highlights

The simplest thing in the box

A weight has one job - get the bait down and keep it there. Lead does it more cheaply and more densely than anything else, which is why it is still the standard.

Cast lead

Dense, so a given weight takes up less room and casts better than a bulkier material.

Red painted finish

A visible colour on a rig, and a coating that slows surface oxidation.

Bottom rigs and general bait fishing

Paternosters, running ledgers, Carolina rigs and pier rigs.

Inexpensive

Sinkers are consumables - you lose them on structure, and that is normal.

About this product

Red Lead Fishing Weight – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A sinker does one thing: it takes the bait down and holds it where you want it. Lead is still the standard for it because it is very dense – a lead weight takes up less space than the same weight in steel or tin, which means it casts better and offers less resistance to a fish picking up the bait.

These are cast lead sinkers with a red painted finish. The paint makes the weight visible on a rig and slows surface oxidation, which keeps them looking and handling better in a tackle box.

How much weight you need is decided by depth and current, not by the fish. On a jetty in slack water, a few grams. Off the rocks into a surge, or bottom fishing over reef in a running tide, considerably more. The right weight is the lightest one that holds bottom – anything heavier deadens the rig and makes bites harder to feel.

They work on every standard bottom rig: a paternoster with the weight below the hooks, a running ledger with the line sliding through a bead and swivel, or a Carolina rig for soft plastics.

A note on the brand. Mustad do not make lead sinkers – their entire weight range is tungsten, branded TitanX. A red painted lead weight is from another maker or a distributor own label. Ask us and we will tell you what we actually have in the shop.

Questions

Good to know

Is this a Mustad product?

No. Mustad make no lead weights at all - their entire weights range is tungsten under the TitanX name, with no red lead product of any kind. A red painted lead sinker is from another manufacturer or a distributor own label. We would rather tell you than let the listing imply otherwise.

What weight do I need?

Whatever is the lightest that holds bottom where you are fishing. Depth and current decide it, not the size of the fish. Too heavy and the rig deadens and you feel fewer bites; too light and it rolls away down the tide.

Lead or tungsten?

Tungsten is denser still, so a tungsten weight of the same mass is smaller and transmits bottom contact better - which matters for lure fishing. It also costs several times as much. For bait fishing, where you will lose weights on structure, lead is the sensible choice.

Is lead safe to handle?

Lead sinkers are used worldwide and handling them occasionally is not a hazard, but sensible practice is worth following: do not hold them in your mouth, do not let children play with them, and wash your hands before eating after a session. Some countries restrict lead in freshwater fisheries - Tanzania does not.

What rigs can I use it on?

All the standard ones: a paternoster with the weight below the hooks, a running ledger where the line slides through the weight, a Carolina rig for soft plastics, or a simple pier rig off a jetty.

Why is it painted red?

Visibility on the rig, and the paint slows surface oxidation so the weights stay clean in a box. There is no strong evidence that a fish cares what colour the sinker is.

What sizes and weights are available?

Our supplier does not publish the range carried in this listing. Tell us what depth and current you fish and we will tell you what weights are on the shelf before you order.

How should I store them?

Dry, in their own compartment. Wet lead sitting against hooks and swivels accelerates corrosion in everything around it, and loose weights rolling around a box damage soft lures.
