Highlights

Pre-tied, and five times the wire

The cord on an assist hook is the part that breaks, and tying one properly is a skill. These come ready-made on 5X wire, which removes both problems at once.

5X heavy duty

Wire five sizes heavier than standard - it does not open out under offshore drag settings.

Pre-tied assist cord

Ready to fit, correctly tied and correctly proportioned to the hook.

Forged high carbon steel

Strong, hard, with a corrosion-resistant finish for saltwater.

Good strength-to-weight

A heavy hook that still lets the jig flutter properly on the drop.

Product description

About this product

Assist hooks are simple to understand and surprisingly easy to get wrong. The cord has to be the right length, tied with the right knot, whipped properly, and often sleeved to stop it chafing on the jig. Do it badly and the cord is the thing that lets go under load – which is a poor way to lose a good fish.

The 8062-5X comes pre-tied. The hook is 5X – built on wire five sizes heavier than standard – forged in high carbon steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, and the assist cord is fitted at the right length for the hook.

The reason to fish an assist at all is placement. Fish attack the head of a jig, not the tail, so the hook belongs at the top eye where the strike happens. Because it swings free on cord, the weight of the jig cannot lever it out during the fight, and because nothing hangs off the tail, the jig flutters on the drop as it was designed to – which is where most jigging bites come from.

Off Dar es Salaam this is a hook for the offshore drop-offs, pinnacles and banks: amberjack, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, big grouper, jobfish and kingfish.

Questions

Good to know

What is an assist hook?

A short hook tied to a length of braided cord and attached to the top eye of a jig, so it hangs beside the jig head rather than below the tail. Jigging fish attack the head of a jig, so that is where the hook needs to be - and because the hook swings free on cord, it finds the mouth rather than being levered out by the weight of the jig.

What does 5X mean?

The hook is built on the wire diameter normally used for a hook five sizes larger. It resists opening under heavy drag, at the cost of needing more force to set - which is fine on the heavy tackle offshore jigging uses.

Why buy pre-tied rather than tying my own?

Because the cord is what fails, and tying assists properly - right length, right knot, whipped and sleeved - is a skill. Pre-tied hooks remove that variable. Once you know how, tying your own is cheaper and lets you set your own lengths.

How long should the assist cord be?

Short - the hook should hang roughly level with the middle of the jig, no further. Too long and the hook fouls the jig on the drop; too short and it cannot swing into the mouth. Most ready-tied assists are already set correctly for the jig sizes they are sold for.

Single or twin assist?

A single fouls less and is kinder to a released fish; a twin gives two chances at a hook-up and suits bigger jigs and bigger fish. A common rule is a twin above about 150 g of jig and a single below.

Do I remove the tail treble from my jig?

Most experienced jiggers do. A tail treble catches bottom, fouls the assist cord on the drop, and deadens the flutter that draws the bite. The marginal hook-up gain is not usually worth it.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Amberjack, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, big grouper, jobfish and kingfish on the offshore drop-offs, pinnacles and banks.

How do I look after assist hooks?

Rinse in fresh water and dry them before storage. Check the cord for chafe and fraying after every trip - the cord is the part that fails, not the hook - and retie or replace at the first sign of wear. Check the point on a thumbnail.
