Highlights

Red, and inline

Red is thought to read as blood or gill colour underwater. Inline geometry is the part that matters more: the point sits in the shank plane, which is why it hooks in the jaw and not the gut.

Red nickel finish

Documented by Mustad on the Demon Perfect Inline Circle 39951NP.

Inline (non-offset)

The point lies in the same plane as the shank - the geometry release fisheries specify.

1X Fine wire

Light wire that penetrates easily, ideal for live bait presentation.

Opti-Angle UltraPoint, Nor-Tempered

Mustad point and heat treatment across the whole Demon family.

About this product

Demon Circle Red Hooks – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Red hooks have a long following among bait anglers, on the theory that red reads underwater as blood or as the colour of gills, and that a bait already carrying that signal triggers a take. Whether it does is arguable; what is not arguable is that red hooks catch fish and a lot of experienced people prefer them.

The more important half of this hook is its geometry. Mustad document the red nickel finish on the Demon Perfect Inline Circle, pattern 39951NP – an inline circle, meaning the point sits in the same flat plane as the shank and the eye. That is the geometry that makes a circle hook do what it is supposed to do: slide out of the throat as the fish turns, and catch in the hinge of the jaw. Offset circles, bent out of plane, hook a few more fish and gut-hook noticeably more of them, which is why many release fisheries worldwide permit inline hooks only.

The 39951NP is 1X Fine – lighter wire than standard, which penetrates easily and is kinder to a live bait. Mustad make it from size 6 up to 10/0 with the Opti-Angle needle point, 4.3 UltraPoint and Nor-Tempered steel, and it is the most widely used pattern in the Demon range.

The rule with any circle hook is the same: do not strike. Let the fish load the rod, then wind steadily and lift.

Questions

Good to know

Does a red hook really catch more fish?

It is a genuine and long-standing preference among bait anglers, on the theory that red reads as blood or gill colour underwater. We would not claim it as proven. What is certain is that the hook geometry matters far more than the colour.

How do I set a circle hook?

You do not strike. Let the fish take the bait and turn away, let the rod load, then wind steadily and lift. Striking pulls the hook straight out of the mouth. This takes discipline and it is the single commonest mistake people make with circle hooks.

Why use a circle hook at all?

Because the point is turned back toward the shank, so it cannot easily grab soft tissue. As the fish turns away the hook slides out of the throat and catches in the hinge of the jaw. Far fewer fish are gut-hooked, which matters if you release them and matters if you want your bait back.

What does inline mean and why does it matter?

The point sits in the same flat plane as the shank and the eye. Offset circles are bent slightly out of that plane, which raises the hook-up rate a little but gut-hooks noticeably more fish. If you release fish, buy inline.

What is 1X Fine wire?

Wire one size lighter than standard for that hook size. It penetrates more easily and is gentler on a live bait, at the cost of bending sooner under very heavy drag. It is the right choice for live-bait fishing on moderate tackle.

What is UltraPoint?

Mustad point package. The point is sharpened in three stages by their Opti-Angle process, which removes less metal than conventional grinding, so it is sharper and stays sharp instead of rolling over on the first piece of coral. Mustad specify it as 4.3 UltraPoint - a point length 4.3 times the wire diameter.

Which size will I get?

Our supplier does not publish the sizes in this listing. Tell us what you are targeting and we will check the packs on the shelf before you order.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse used hooks in fresh water and dry them before they go back in the box - a wet salty hook rusts its neighbours as well as itself. Keep them in a sealed box rather than an open tray, and throw away any hook whose point will not catch on a thumbnail.
