Highlights

The upgrade that actually matters

Factory hooks are sized for an average fish. A 4X treble is built on wire four sizes heavier - which is the difference between landing a kingfish and telling a story about one.

4X heavy duty

Wire four sizes heavier than standard, so it resists opening under real drag.

Forged high carbon steel

Flattened through the bends for stiffness against straightening.

Strong eye

Sized for heavy split rings and heavy leaders without deforming.

Precision balanced

Weighted so a re-hooked lure still swims the way it was designed to.

Product description

About this product

Most lures leave the factory with hooks chosen to keep the retail price down, sized for an average fish in average conditions. Take that lure somewhere with kingfish, GT or tuna and the hooks are the first thing to fail – straightened, or opened at the bend. Replacing them is the cheapest and most effective upgrade in fishing.

The 6066-4X is Noeby heavy treble. The 4X rating means it is built on wire four sizes heavier than standard for the hook size, and it is forged – the wire is pressed flat through the bends, which greatly increases resistance to opening. The steel is high carbon with a corrosion-resistant finish, and the eye is sized to take heavy split rings without deforming.

Noeby describe it as precision balanced, which matters on a treble upgrade: a much heavier hook can sit a lure lower in the water and slow its action. If a lure stops swimming properly after a change, drop a size.

Around Dar es Salaam this is what you fit to poppers, stickbaits, minnows and trolling lures before taking them to the reef edges, drop-offs and offshore banks – kingfish, GT, tuna, wahoo and big queenfish.

Questions

Good to know

What does the X strength rating mean?

It compares the wire to the standard for that hook size. A 4X hook is built on wire four sizes heavier; a 7X hook on wire seven sizes heavier. Heavier wire resists opening under drag but needs more force to drive home, which is why heavy hooks belong on heavy tackle.

Why upgrade the hooks on a lure?

Because factory hooks are the cheapest component and the first to fail. Straightened hooks and opened split rings lose far more good fish than broken line does, and replacing them costs a fraction of the lure.

Do I need to change the split rings too?

Almost always. Fitting a heavy hook to a factory split ring just moves the weak point to the ring. Match the ring to the hook and to the drag you intend to fish, and use split-ring pliers rather than your fingers.

Will heavier hooks change how my lure swims?

They can. A much heavier hook sits the lure lower and slows its action. If a lure stops working properly after a hook upgrade, drop a size or move to inline singles, which weigh less than a treble of equivalent strength.

Treble or single?

Trebles give more points and slightly better hook-up rates. Singles are stronger for the same wire, foul far less, are much easier to unhook, and do less damage to a released fish. For serious saltwater lure fishing, many people now run heavy singles.

What size treble should I fit?

The same size as the original unless the lure is specifically under-hooked. Going up a size adds weight and can spoil the action. If in doubt, bring the lure in and we will match hooks and rings to it.

What will I use it for around Dar es Salaam?

Upgrading poppers, stickbaits, minnows and trolling lures for kingfish, GT, tuna, wahoo and big queenfish on the reef edges, drop-offs and offshore banks.

How do I look after hooks in salt water?

Rinse them in fresh water and dry before they go back in the box. Check the points on a thumbnail before every session, and replace any hook that will not catch - a blunt point is the commonest reason for a dropped fish.
