About this product

Most people end up with two levels of tackle storage: small boxes for the lures they are fishing with today, and one large box that everything lives in between trips and travels with them. This is the large one.

It is moulded from ABS, a hard rigid plastic rather than the flexible polypropylene used in cheaper boxes. Rigidity is the point – a box that flexes lets its contents move and does not protect them, and a hard-sided box can be sat on, stood on and dropped in a boat without collapsing.

At under 20 litres it holds several lure boxes, a set of pliers, leader spools, spare reels and the odds and ends that accumulate, and it is still a size one person can carry in one hand.

The lid seals to keep spray and rain out, which is the single most valuable feature of a tackle box on this coast. The thing that destroys tackle here is not use, it is salt water sitting in the bottom of a box with a hundred hooks in it.

Open it and let it dry after any wet trip, and keep a few silica gel packets inside. It is the cheapest insurance there is for a box of tackle worth many times its price.

What fits in under 20 litres?

Several small lure boxes, pliers and tools, leader spools, spare reels and the accumulated odds and ends. It is the main box rather than the one you carry to the water.

Is it really waterproof?

The lid seals against spray and rain, which is the job. It is not a submersible case. On a boat, that sealing is what stops salt water collecting in the bottom and rusting everything inside.

Why ABS rather than ordinary plastic?

Rigidity. ABS holds its shape where softer polypropylene flexes, so the box protects its contents and can be stood on or sat on in a boat without collapsing.

Does it have dividers?

Our supplier does not publish the internal layout for this box. Ask us and we will open one in the shop and tell you exactly how it is divided.

Can I use it for anything else?

Plenty of people use them for tools, boat spares, camera gear and first-aid kits. A sealed rigid box is useful well beyond fishing.

Will it survive being left in the sun?

ABS is tough but UV degrades all plastics eventually. Keep it in shade when you can; a box stored on an open deck year-round will go chalky and eventually brittle.

How do I look after a tackle box in this climate?

Rinse salt spray off the outside, and open the box and let it dry after any trip where water got in. A closed box with salt water in the bottom rusts every hook in it. Silica gel packets in the box are worth the small cost.
