Product description

About this product

Boiling water takes fuel and time; tablets take half an hour and taste of themselves. A filter straw takes neither. Put it in the water and drink, and the hollow-fibre element holds back the bacteria and protozoa that make surface water dangerous.

The supplier rates this one at 0.2 micron, removing at least 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of parasitic protozoa, with a working life of around 1,000 litres.

Questions

Good to know

Where do these figures come from?

The micron rating, the removal percentages and the 1,000 litre life on this page are the supplier's rather than an independently certified test result, and they are marked as such. Treat a filter straw as a serious improvement on untreated water, not as a laboratory guarantee.

What does it not remove?

Hollow-fibre straws remove bacteria and protozoa. They do not remove viruses, dissolved salt, heavy metals or chemicals. That matters: in Tanzania the common risks from surface water are bacterial and protozoal, which is exactly what this handles, but water near industry, mining or heavy agriculture needs more than a straw.

Can I drink straight from a river or a pond?

That is what it is for. Avoid stagnant water, water with an oily film, and anything with a chemical smell, because a filter cannot help with those.

How do I look after it in the field?

Backflush it after each session by blowing back through the mouthpiece, and never let it freeze with water inside, which cracks the fibres. Let it dry between trips.

Does it work on salt water?

No. Nothing in this class desalinates. Sea water through a filter straw is still sea water.

Can I use it with a bottle?

Yes, most people do: fill a bottle from the source and drink through the straw from the bottle rather than kneeling at the water's edge.

How do I know when it is finished?

It gets progressively harder to draw through. When suction becomes a real effort and backflushing no longer helps, the filter is done.

Is it worth keeping at home?

Yes. In a flood or a supply failure, a filter straw in a drawer is worth more than a case of bottled water in a shop that has closed.
