This is a forearm guard for the leading arm, in the youth size.
Batting protection has a specific gap in it. The hands are in gloves, the elbow may be in a guard, and between them the forearm has nothing. That stretch of arm is directly in the line of a ball that lifts off a length – and it contains the ulna, the bone you can feel running along the outside of the forearm just under the skin. A cricket ball at pace onto it fractures it, and forearm fractures are among the longest lay-offs in the game.
A forearm guard is a padded sleeve or strapped pad over that area. It is worn on the leading arm, which is the left arm for a right-handed batsman.
The youth size matters. Junior players are the group most likely to be hit on the arm, because they are still learning to judge length, and they are the group least likely to be wearing a guard – usually because the one in the kit bag is an adult size that slides down to the wrist. A properly sized youth guard stays where it is put.
Two things to be aware of. Puma no longer list this arm guard – it is a discontinued season – and they publish no material specification for it. We would rather say so than repeat something from a retailer listing. Tell us the measurement round the forearm and we will check the stock before it ships.
It is worn under or over the shirt sleeve; in this heat most players wear it outside.
