This is a plastic stump set on a free-standing base, supplied with bails.

The base is the point. Wooden stumps have spikes and need soft ground to be hammered into, and a mallet to do it with. Most cricket actually played in this region happens on surfaces where that is simply not possible – concrete, tarmac, packed earth, a school hall, a beach, a compound. On those, a stump you can drive in is useless and a stump on a stand is the only option.

Plastic is the right material for the same reason. These get knocked over constantly, left outside, thrown in a car boot and used by children. Wooden stumps in that life would be splintered within a season.

It sets up and moves in seconds, which matters more than it sounds. A set of stumps that can be repositioned lets you shorten the pitch for younger players, move the game out of the sun, or set up a second wicket for a practice session.

Under the Laws of Cricket the tops of the stumps stand 28 in (71.12 cm) above the playing surface and a set of three spans 9 in (22.86 cm). Junior dimensions are left to national governing bodies rather than fixed in the Laws.

Will they blow over?

On an exposed ground in wind, yes - they are light by design. Weight the base with a sandbag or a couple of bricks if it is breezy. That is the trade for not having to hammer them in.

Are they suitable for a match?

For practice, coaching, school and social cricket, certainly. For a formal match, check what your competition specifies - many require regulation wooden stumps driven into the ground.

How long will they last?

Years, if they are not left in direct sun permanently. UV eventually makes plastic brittle here, which is the usual way a set like this ends. Bring it in between sessions and it will last a long time.
