About this product

This is the short-sleeve version of the same 3 mm SCR neoprene back-zip suit. The trade is straightforward: you lose the arm coverage, and you gain completely free shoulders.

That matters most to anyone moving their arms constantly. Paddling out on a board, swimming a distance in open water, or working on a boat, neoprene across the shoulder is the thing you notice – it resists every stroke and tires the shoulders over an hour. A short-sleeve suit takes that away while keeping the core covered, which is where the body loses most of its heat.

For the Indian Ocean, where the water runs 26-29 degrees, it is a very sensible amount of suit. The torso stays warm on a long session, the sun stays off your back and chest, and the arms stay free. The compromise is that your forearms are exposed to coral, hydroids and sun – so if you are diving reefs or working around a wreck or a mooring, the long-sleeve version is the better choice.

Fit rules are the same as any wetsuit. Tight everywhere, no loose folds at the lower back or behind the knees, and hard to get on when dry. A wetsuit that fits loosely flushes cold water through with every movement and insulates nothing.

Good to know

Do I need a wetsuit in Tanzanian water?

Not for warmth on a short swim - the sea here runs around 26-29 C. You need one for long dives, where even warm water pulls heat out of you over an hour, and for protection: sun on the back and shoulders, coral scrapes, and stingers.

Why 3 mm and not thicker?

Because 3 mm is the right thickness for tropical water. A 5 mm suit in the Indian Ocean is too hot to dive comfortably and needs far more lead to sink. 3 mm gives protection and a little warmth without either problem.

How should a wetsuit fit?

Tight everywhere, with no loose folds at the lower back, armpits or behind the knees. A suit works by holding a thin film of water against the skin - if water flushes through, it does nothing. It should be hard to get on when dry and comfortable once wet.

Why is the zip at the back?

It is the simplest and most watertight arrangement, and it keeps the chest panel unbroken. You need someone to pull the cord up for you, or you use the long leash attached to the slider to do it yourself.

How do I put it on without tearing it?

Roll it up like a sock, work it up limb by limb with the flat of your hands, and never pull on a single point with your fingertips or nails. Neoprene tears at the seam where a nail digs in. A plastic bag over the foot helps it slide.

How do I look after it?

Rinse inside and out in fresh water after every use, turn it inside out to dry, and hang it over something broad - a wide hanger or a rail - in the shade. Never dry a wetsuit in the sun and never fold it on a crease; both destroy neoprene faster than the water ever will.

Can I wear it for surfing or swimming as well?

Yes. Below the surface it is a dive suit, on the surface it is sun and abrasion protection. The same 3 mm suit works for surfing, open-water swimming, kitesurfing and boat work.
