Chalk is not optional

About this product

Cue Set with Accessories – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A snooker cue supplied with accessories – the sensible way to buy if you are starting out or have just put a table in.

The reason a set makes sense is that a cue on its own is not enough to play with. Chalk in particular is not an optional extra: the contact between a leather tip and a polished ball is low friction, and without chalk the tip skids off the ball instead of gripping it. Almost every miscue a beginner blames on their technique is actually a chalk problem. A rest matters too, the first time you face a shot you cannot reach – and on a full-size table that happens within the first frame.

What is in a set varies between suppliers, and we would rather confirm than guess. Ask us and we will open the box and tell you exactly what is in it before you order.

The advice that applies to any cue: rack it vertically or lay it flat in a case and never lean it against a wall, which is how cues warp. Keep it out of damp and direct sun. In this climate a badly stored cue moves within a year, and a warped cue cannot be put right – roll it on a flat table and watch the tip to check.

Tips are consumables. Replace one when it has gone hard and glassy, when it has mushroomed over the ferrule, or when it has worn down toward the ferrule. A regular player gets through a few a year.

Questions

Good to know

What length cue should I buy?

The standard is 57 to 58 inches, which suits most adults. If you are much taller than average, a 58 inch cue or an extension is worth having; for a child, a shorter cue is genuinely easier to control. The other question is joint: a one-piece cue plays best but does not travel, which is why most players use a two-piece or three-quarter jointed cue.

When does a cue tip need replacing?

When it has gone hard and glassy, when it has mushroomed out over the ferrule, or when it has worn down so far that the ferrule is close to contacting the ball. A hard, polished tip will not hold chalk and miscues constantly. Tips are consumables - a regular player replaces one a few times a year.

Why does chalk matter so much?

Because a cue tip on a ball is a low-friction contact, and without chalk it slips. A miscue - where the tip skids off the ball instead of gripping - is almost always a chalk problem rather than a technique one. Chalk before every shot where you are not hitting dead centre, and brush it on rather than grinding it into the tip.

One piece, two piece or three-quarter jointed?

A one-piece cue plays best because there is no joint to interrupt the transfer of energy, and it is useless for travel. A two-piece splits in the middle and fits a case. A three-quarter joint puts the split further up the shaft, closer to a one-piece feel while still packing down - which is why serious snooker players use them.

How do I look after a cue?

Store it vertically in a rack or flat in a case, never leaning against a wall, which is how cues warp. Keep it out of direct sun and away from damp, both of which move wood. Wipe the shaft with a dry cloth after playing rather than a damp one, and never leave it in a car.

How do I know if a cue is warped?

Roll it on a flat table and watch the tip. A straight cue rolls smoothly; a warped one lifts and drops visibly. Check before you buy and check occasionally afterwards - a cue that lived against a wall in a humid room will have moved.

What tip size should I have?

Snooker cues typically run 9 to 10 mm and pool cues 12 to 13 mm, because the balls are different sizes and the shot demands differ. A smaller tip gives more precision with side spin; a larger one is more forgiving. Match it to the game you actually play.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. A table is a heavy two-person item, so tell us when you order and we will arrange the right transport and talk through access.
