Anyone who has carried a paddleboard more than a couple of hundred metres knows the problem. A board under the arm is awkward, it catches the wind, and by the time you reach the water your shoulder has had enough. A carry strap moves the weight onto your shoulder and leaves both hands free – for a paddle, a bag, or a child.
The strap is a single length of heavy nylon webbing with a padded shoulder section in the middle and an adjustable loop at each end. The loops go around the board – or under the hull of a kayak – and pull tight, so it adapts to a shortboard, a longboard, a thick inflatable SUP or a hard-shell kayak without any change of fitting. Nylon is the right material for this: it takes a load, dries quickly, and does not rot when it goes home damp and salty.
It is genuinely a small item. Folded it takes up no more room than a pair of socks, so it lives permanently in a board bag pocket rather than being something you remember to bring.
For a kayak, the strap works well for a short carry from vehicle to water. For a longer portage with a heavy hard-shell boat, a trolley is the better tool – a sling is still taking the full weight on one shoulder.
