Most people’s first bodyboard is a slab of soft foam bought at a beach stall, and most of them last one holiday. This is the next step up: a 40-inch board built the way bodyboards are supposed to be built, at a price that still makes sense for something a family will use a few weekends a year.
The core is thicker than a budget board’s and has a stringer running through it, which does two things. It stops the board taking a permanent bend the first time a decent wave lands on it, and it makes the board stiffer under your chest so more of the wave’s push turns into forward speed rather than being absorbed by flex.
The deck is a 4 mm cross-linked polyethylene foam, heat-laminated to the core rather than glued. Glue lines are where cheap boards come apart, particularly in heat, so a laminated build is worth having on this coast. Underneath, the slick has channels moulded into it – these bite into the wave face and let you angle across a wave instead of being pushed straight in to the beach.
It comes in navy blue with a coiled wrist leash and a padded wrist strap. Wear the leash: in a shore break a loose board travels fast and hits hard.
