Highlights

Short blade, because the point is the kick

A long diving fin carries you down the pool on two lazy kicks and trains nothing. A short blade gives just enough extra purchase that you have to keep kicking - which is what loosens stiff ankles and builds a kick that still works when the fins come off.

Short blade

A training blade, not a diving blade. It builds ankle flexibility and kick rhythm instead of just pushing you along.

Full-foot silicone

Soft enough to wear over bare feet for an hour without the blistering a hard rubber foot pocket causes.

Anti-slip sole

Textured underfoot, so walking the wet tiles from the changing room to the pool edge is less of a gamble.

Packs small

Short fins fit in a swim bag beside the goggles and towel - no need for a separate fin bag.

Product description

About this product

These are training fins: a short, wide blade in a full-foot silicone pocket. The short blade is deliberate. A long diving fin does the work for you, moving you down the pool on two lazy kicks. A short blade gives just enough extra purchase that you have to keep the kick going, which is what actually trains the legs.

The main thing they change is your ankles. Most adult swimmers have stiff ankles from years of shoes, and a stiff ankle turns a kick into a brake – the foot pushes water forward instead of back. A short fin loads the ankle at the end of each kick and stretches it a little further every length. After a few weeks of fin sets, the kick without fins is noticeably better.

They also buy speed, and speed is useful for its own sake. At a higher tempo you can work on body roll, on the catch, on underwater dolphin off the wall – all things that fall apart at slow beginner pace. Butterfly in particular is far easier to learn with fins on.

Silicone rather than hard rubber is what makes them wearable. A rubber foot pocket rubs the instep and the back of the heel raw over a long session; soft silicone flexes with the foot. Get the size right – a fin that is loose will slip off mid-kick and one that is tight will cramp your arch within a few lengths.

Questions

Good to know

What is the difference between these and diving fins?

Blade length. A diving fin has a long blade built to move a diver with gear on, slowly and efficiently. A short training blade gives resistance and rhythm for pool work. Swimming laps in long diving fins trains very little.

Will fins make my kick lazy?

Not with a short blade, used in sets rather than for every length. The risk is real with long fins, which do the work for you. Use fins for drills and kick sets, then swim the main set without them.

How should they fit?

Snug with no heel lift. If the fin slides at the heel when you kick it will come off or blister you. If your arch cramps in the first few lengths it is too tight. Wear thin socks if you are between sizes.

Can I snorkel in them?

In shallow calm water, yes - over the reef at Bongoyo or Mbudya they are fine. For anything deeper or against a current you want a longer blade, which moves you further per kick with less effort.

Why does my foot cramp?

Usually a fin that is slightly too tight, or a kick driven from the knee rather than the hip. Ease the tempo, point the toes less aggressively, and stretch the arch before the set. Cramping settles once the ankles get used to the load.

How do I look after them?

Rinse in fresh water after every session and dry in the shade. Silicone perishes in sunlight and chlorine, so never leave them on a hot poolside or in the back of a car all afternoon. Store flat, not folded.

Will they help me learn butterfly?

Considerably. Fins give enough propulsion to hold the body rhythm that butterfly needs, so you can feel the two-beat timing instead of stalling halfway down the pool. Most coaches teach the stroke with fins first.
