Highlights

Watch the reef go past underneath you

Six millimetres of optically clear polycarbonate between you and the water. Over a reef or a sandbank it is closer to snorkelling than to paddling - and nobody gets wet.

6 mm polycarbonate hull

The same material class as a riot shield - it flexes rather than shatters, and carries a UV-stable layer so it does not yellow.

Carries 200 kg

Two adults with room to spare, on a 3.3 m hull that stays steady while people move about (supplier figure).

Only 20 kg

Light for its size, because the aluminium frame does the structural work rather than a thick moulded hull (supplier figure).

Complete set

Two adjustable seats, two paddles, the aluminium frame and two buoyancy bladders are all included.

Product description

About this product

A clear kayak is a genuinely different thing to paddle. Over sand you watch your own shadow move across the bottom; over a reef or a sea-grass bed you see fish, rays and coral going past a few feet below your knees. It is the closest thing to snorkelling that keeps you dry, and it is why these boats are a fixture at every clear-water tourism operation from Zanzibar to the Caribbean.

The hull is 6 mm polycarbonate – the material used for machine guards and riot shields, chosen because it is optically clear and because it absorbs impact by flexing rather than by cracking. Acrylic of the same thickness would be clearer still and would shatter the first time it met a rock. The sheet carries a UV-stable layer, which is what stops a clear boat going yellow after a season in this sun.

Structure comes from an anodised aluminium frame rather than from hull thickness, which is how a 3.3 m boat comes in at around 20 kg – lighter than most polyethylene kayaks half its size. Two sealed buoyancy bladders provide reserve flotation. Two adjustable seats sit on the frame, and removing one leaves a single-paddler layout with a lot of room.

It is not a surf boat or an open-ocean boat. Use it where you would want to use it anyway: flat, clear, shallow water – lagoons inside the reef, sandbanks, sheltered bays and clear lake water. Launch it off sand rather than dragging it over coral or concrete, and it will stay clear for years.

Questions

Good to know

Will it scratch?

Polycarbonate scratches more easily than glass, so launch and land on sand rather than dragging it across coral, concrete or rock. Light surface scratches can be polished out with a plastic polish. Treated sensibly it stays clear for years.

Is it strong enough to be safe?

Yes - 6 mm polycarbonate is impact-resistant by design; it deforms rather than shattering. It is not, however, a boat for surf or rocky shorelines, and it should not be dropped onto a hard slipway.

Where is it best used around Dar es Salaam?

Clear, calm, shallow water is the whole point: the lagoons inside the reef, the sandbanks off Bongoyo and Mbudya, sheltered bays, and clear stretches of lake. Cloudy harbour water gives you nothing the boat is for.

Can one person paddle it?

Yes. Take out one seat and sit near the centre. There is a lot of room for gear when you do.

Does it come with paddles?

Yes - two paddles, two adjustable seats, the aluminium frame and two buoyancy bladders are all supplied.

How do I store it?

Out of direct sun, on its side or on padded supports, with the hull clean and dry. Constant UV is the main enemy of any clear plastic, and grit trapped under a cover will scratch it.

Is it suitable for tour or hotel use?

It is a popular choice for lodges and water-sports operators for exactly the reason guests like it - the view. For commercial use, budget for spare paddles and a proper padded storage rack, and brief guests to launch off sand only.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, including to the islands and coastal lodges. A clear kayak needs careful handling in transit, so tell us your destination and we will arrange it properly and quote before you order.
