About this product
A clear kayak is a genuinely different thing to paddle. Over sand you watch your own shadow move across the bottom; over a reef or a sea-grass bed you see fish, rays and coral going past a few feet below your knees. It is the closest thing to snorkelling that keeps you dry, and it is why these boats are a fixture at every clear-water tourism operation from Zanzibar to the Caribbean.
The hull is 6 mm polycarbonate – the material used for machine guards and riot shields, chosen because it is optically clear and because it absorbs impact by flexing rather than by cracking. Acrylic of the same thickness would be clearer still and would shatter the first time it met a rock. The sheet carries a UV-stable layer, which is what stops a clear boat going yellow after a season in this sun.
Structure comes from an anodised aluminium frame rather than from hull thickness, which is how a 3.3 m boat comes in at around 20 kg – lighter than most polyethylene kayaks half its size. Two sealed buoyancy bladders provide reserve flotation. Two adjustable seats sit on the frame, and removing one leaves a single-paddler layout with a lot of room.
It is not a surf boat or an open-ocean boat. Use it where you would want to use it anyway: flat, clear, shallow water – lagoons inside the reef, sandbanks, sheltered bays and clear lake water. Launch it off sand rather than dragging it over coral or concrete, and it will stay clear for years.
