The awkward moment in a tandem kayak is when the person in front turns round to say something. In a narrow boat that is enough to make everyone nervous. This one is a full metre across, which is wide even by inflatable standards, and the result is a boat two people can move about in without thinking about it.
It is 321 cm long and rated to 220 kg, so two adults plus a cool box and dry bags is a realistic load rather than an optimistic one. The cockpit holds two inflatable seats with cushioned backrests, and the form-fitted construction keeps water from slopping into the cockpit in chop, so you and your gear stay dry.
Two removable fins come with it, in different sizes. That is more useful than it sounds: the bigger fin gives strong tracking in open water and a breeze, the smaller one lets you turn tightly and works in shallower water. The hull is Bestway’s Inflata-Shield fabric – puncture resistant, limited stretch, and grippy enough to sit on wet – over three separate air chambers.
A grab rope runs round the hull with built-in grommets, which matters for two reasons: it gives you something to hold getting back in from the water, and it gives you something to tie to at a jetty. It suits Msasani Bay, Kigamboni, Bagamoyo, Zanzibar, Mafia and the lakes.
