About this product
A sit-on-top is the right kind of kayak for warm water, and this is the classic size: nine feet long and 85 cm wide. The length keeps it manageable – it fits on a normal roof rack, turns in its own length, and does not need two people to launch. The width is what makes it stable enough to fish from, because you can turn sideways in the seat well, lean out to net a fish, and it stays under you.
The hull is rotomoulded from LLDPE – linear low-density polyethylene – which means it is formed as a single piece with no joins. That matters for a boat that gets dragged over sand and coral rubble and knocked against a dhow: there are no seams to leak and no gelcoat to crack. Scratches are cosmetic. UV is the thing that ages polyethylene, so the pigment package includes UV stabiliser and the boat should still be stored out of direct sun.
Because it is a sit-on-top, you are not enclosed in a cockpit. Water that washes aboard drains straight out through scupper holes in the deck, so the boat never fills and never needs bailing, and if you do come off you simply climb back on over the side. In the tropics that is worth more than the extra speed a sit-in kayak gives you.
The moulded deck includes a seat well, footwells at several positions for different leg lengths, carry handles and moulded recesses for tackle. A paddle is supplied with the kayak. If you want a padded backrest seat as well, the same kayak is also sold here as a set with one included.
