Highlights

Stable enough to fish from

At 85 cm across, this is a hull you can turn sideways on, cast from, and climb back onto in deep water. Sit-on-top means nothing to trap you and nothing to bail out.

Rated to 140 kg

Enough for an adult plus tackle, a cooler and the day's catch (supplier figure).

One-piece polyethylene hull

Rotomoulded LLDPE - no seams to split, and it shrugs off being dragged up a beach.

Self-draining deck

Scupper holes let water that comes aboard run straight back out, so the boat never needs bailing.

22.5 kg

Light enough for one fit adult to carry a short distance, or two people to lift onto a roof rack (supplier figure).

Product description

About this product

A sit-on-top is the right kind of kayak for warm water, and this is the classic size: nine feet long and 85 cm wide. The length keeps it manageable – it fits on a normal roof rack, turns in its own length, and does not need two people to launch. The width is what makes it stable enough to fish from, because you can turn sideways in the seat well, lean out to net a fish, and it stays under you.

The hull is rotomoulded from LLDPE – linear low-density polyethylene – which means it is formed as a single piece with no joins. That matters for a boat that gets dragged over sand and coral rubble and knocked against a dhow: there are no seams to leak and no gelcoat to crack. Scratches are cosmetic. UV is the thing that ages polyethylene, so the pigment package includes UV stabiliser and the boat should still be stored out of direct sun.

Because it is a sit-on-top, you are not enclosed in a cockpit. Water that washes aboard drains straight out through scupper holes in the deck, so the boat never fills and never needs bailing, and if you do come off you simply climb back on over the side. In the tropics that is worth more than the extra speed a sit-in kayak gives you.

The moulded deck includes a seat well, footwells at several positions for different leg lengths, carry handles and moulded recesses for tackle. A paddle is supplied with the kayak. If you want a padded backrest seat as well, the same kayak is also sold here as a set with one included.

Questions

Good to know

Is a paddle included?

Yes, this listing is the kayak with a paddle. A padded backrest seat is not included - if you want one, we sell the same kayak as a set with a seat, and we also stock seats separately.

Can I fish from it?

That is what the 85 cm beam is for. It is stable enough to turn sideways in, cast from and land a fish over the side. Add a rod holder and an anchor trolley if you fish seriously - we can advise.

Will it fit on my car?

Yes. At nine feet and 22.5 kg it goes on any standard roof bar set with two straps. Two people lift it comfortably; one fit adult can manage it with a shoulder under the middle.

Where can I paddle it around Dar es Salaam?

Inside the reef on calm mornings, the creeks and mangrove channels around Kunduchi and Mbweni, the runs out to Bongoyo and Mbudya on a settled day, and inland on Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and calmer river stretches. It is a recreational hull, not an open-ocean boat.

What happens if I fall off?

You climb back on. That is the main reason a sit-on-top suits warm water - there is no cockpit to trap you, the deck drains itself, and re-entry in deep water is something most people manage on the first try. Wear a buoyancy aid all the same.

How do I look after a plastic kayak in this climate?

Rinse it with fresh water after sea use and store it out of direct sun - under a tree, in a store room, or under a cover. Polyethylene is tough but constant equatorial UV eventually makes the surface chalky and brittle. Store it on its side or hanging, never resting on its hull in the sun, which lets the flat of the hull deform.

Is 140 kg the weight of the paddler or everything aboard?

Everything - paddler, paddle, tackle, cooler, water and catch. Aim to stay comfortably under it; a kayak loaded to its limit sits low and gets wet and slow.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes. A kayak is bulky, so contact us with your destination and we will confirm the transport options and cost before you order.
