Wilson’s Tour Slam Lite is an entry-level aluminium frame, and there is no reason to dress that up – it is a racket for learning the game on, and it is good at exactly that.

The specification is all pointed the same way. A 112 square inch head is oversize: a large sweet spot, and crucially a much smaller penalty for missing it, so the off-centre hits a beginner makes constantly still go over the net. 291 g strung is light enough to swing easily, and the balance is 6 points head-light, which makes the racket quick to move into position.

At 27.5 inches it is half an inch longer than a standard racket. That extra leverage adds a little power and reach, which is there to supply pace a developing player cannot yet generate themselves.

Wilson list Power Bridge for longer main strings and faster rebound, Stop Shock Sleeves at three and nine o’clock to damp vibration, and their V-Matrix throat geometry for a larger sweet spot. It comes pre-strung, 16 by 19, in grip sizes 1 to 4.

One correction worth noting: this racket is listed in some places under the code WR083610, which does not appear in Wilson’s own catalogue. Wilson’s model number is WR19900, article WR199010U.

What does head size change?

How much the racket helps you against how much control you have. A bigger head means more power and a bigger sweet spot that punishes mishits less - which is why beginners should start oversize. A smaller head means more control and more feedback, which is what a player with a full swing needs to keep the ball in. Under 100 square inches is control; 105 to 110 is forgiving; above 110 is maximum help.

Is this a beginner racket?

Yes, squarely. An aluminium frame at 112 square inches and 291 g strung, pre-strung and ready to play - Wilson build it for someone learning the sport or a junior moving up to a full-size racket. It is not a performance frame and it is not pretending to be.

Does it come strung?

What does extended length do?

At 27.5 inches this is half an inch longer than a standard racket. The extra length gives more leverage and therefore a little more power and reach, at some cost in manoeuvrability. On a beginner frame it is there to help generate pace that the player cannot yet produce themselves.

When do strings need replacing?

Long before they break. Strings lose tension and elasticity from the day they go in - the stringbed goes dead while looking perfect. The old rule still holds: restring as many times a year as you play per week. Twice a week, twice a year. At minimum once a year regardless, and sooner here, because heat accelerates tension loss badly.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.

How often should I change my overgrip?

When it stops being tacky, which in this heat and humidity is far sooner than the packet suggests - for a regular player, every few sessions. A slick grip makes you squeeze harder, and squeezing harder is slower, more tiring and how tennis elbow starts.
