The Mavis 250 is the entry grade in Yonex-s nylon shuttlecock range, and it exists for a specific and sensible reason: some shuttles are going to get destroyed.
In a coaching session, a school class or a first month of playing, shuttles go into the floor, into the net, into the ceiling and over the fence. Mis-hits bend skirts. Nobody is judging the flight against a feather shuttle because nobody hitting them can tell yet. Buying the top-grade shuttle for that is simply spending money on durability you are not going to use before the shuttle is lost or trodden on.
It still uses a natural cork base with a nylon skirt, which is the thing that keeps it a real badminton shuttle rather than a toy. Cork gives the shuttle the feel off the strings that synthetic bases do not, and Yonex keep it even at this grade.
Be clear about the limits. It is the least durable and least consistent of the three Mavis grades – Yonex position it below the 300 and well below the 2000, and the flight is noticeably less refined. If you play regularly at a club, the 300 is worth the difference. If you are teaching, learning, or knocking about in a garden, this is the right shuttle.
As with every shuttle here, buy the slow grade. Tanzanian air is warm and thin all year, and a medium or fast shuttle flies long past the baseline. That is the commonest equipment mistake in badminton in this country.
