Telescopic rods exist for one reason and they are very good at it: a six-foot rod that collapses to 42.5 centimetres goes places a two-piece rod cannot. A daypack, a motorbike pannier, a suitcase, a boat locker. If the alternative is leaving the rod at home, a telescopic rod catches more fish than a better rod that stays in the cupboard.
The old objection to telescopics was that they were heavy, soft and unreliable, because they were made of solid glass. This one is carbon fibre, which changes the feel considerably – lighter in the hand, quicker in the tip, and better at showing you a bite. The trade-off that remains is inherent to the design: five overlapping joints will never be quite as smooth a curve as one continuous blank, and the sections need keeping clean to slide properly.
At 1.8 m it is a general-purpose length. It casts well enough off a jetty, a bank or a small boat, handles bait fishing and light lures, and is easy for a beginner or a child to manage. On the coast that means jetty and creek fishing for queenfish, barracuda, mullet and snapper; inland it covers the dams, rivers and lakes.
