The problem with most travel rods is the joints. Every extra ferrule is a stiff spot, and a five-piece rod built carelessly bends in four places and goes rigid in four others. Noeby’s answer on the Beast range is the NXT-Joint: a bidirectional carbon weave at each ferrule so the blank’s curve runs through the joint rather than stopping dead at it. Combined with the TORSEN graphite cloth laid at 45 degrees through the blank, the result is a five-piece rod that loads like a two-piece.

The blank is Torayca carbon – the Japanese fibre – and the components are the ones worth paying for: Fuji guides and a Fuji DPS reel seat, with a premium split EVA grip. At 137 to 152 g depending on the model, it is light enough to fish all day.

The Beast Predator Travel Edition is rated 10-55 g of lure with a maximum drag of 9 kg and takes up to PE 4, which puts it squarely in general predator territory. On this coast that means queenfish, barracuda, kingfish, small trevally and bonito from a boat, a jetty or the rocks. Inland it is a Nile perch and tigerfish rod on the lakes. Models run from 6 ft 0 in to 7 ft 0 in in both spinning and casting versions.

Packed, the whole thing goes into a 50 x 8 x 8 cm tube. If you have ever tried to get a two-piece rod onto a domestic flight to Mafia or Mwanza, that number is the reason this rod exists.

Good to know

Which model should I buy?

Three are made: BTC604MH is 6 ft in four sections and extra-fast, for tighter water and precise casting; BTC705MH is 7 ft in five sections for a baitcaster; BTS705MH is the same 7 ft five-piece for a spinning reel and the lightest of the three at 137 g. All share the 10-55 g rating and 9 kg drag.

Will it really take a decent fish?

Yes - 9 kg of drag at 45 degrees and a PE 4 rating is a serious rating for a rod this light. It is built for predators, not pan fish. What it is not is a GT popping rod; for that you want a dedicated heavy blank.

Does a multi-piece rod feel different from a two-piece?

Slightly, but far less than you would expect on this one, because of the NXT-Joint carbon-woven ferrules. A cheap multi-piece rod has obvious flat spots; this does not.

Spinning or casting - which should I buy?

Spinning (BTS705MH) if you fish in wind, throw light lures, or want the more forgiving option. Casting (BTC604MH or BTC705MH) if you are used to a baitcaster and want more accuracy with heavier lures.

What can I catch with it around Dar es Salaam?

Queenfish, barracuda, kingfish, bonito, smaller trevally and snapper from a boat, jetty or rocks. On the lakes it handles Nile perch and tigerfish. The 10-55 g rating covers most poppers, stickbaits, metal slices and soft plastics used here.

What reel size suits it?

A 3000 to 4000 size saltwater spinning reel, or a 150-200 size baitcaster for the casting models. With 20-30 lb braid that is a balanced outfit within the rod's 9 kg drag rating.

Can I take it as hand luggage?

Closed it is under 52 cm, which fits within most cabin-bag dimensions, but airline rules on fishing tackle vary and hooks and tools definitely belong in checked luggage. Check with your airline before you travel.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the blank, guides, ferrules and reel seat in fresh water after every session and dry before it goes back in the tube. Pay particular attention to the ferrules - salt and grit in a joint is what makes a multi-piece rod stick or split.
