About this product

This is the kit you keep in the car. At 1.35 m the rod is very short – shorter than most people expect a fishing rod to be – and that is the point. It goes in a backpack, a boot, a boat locker or a glovebox, and it is there when you find yourself beside water with half an hour to spare.

The set includes the rod, a matched reel and a 28-piece tackle box: hooks, swivels, weights, floats and small lures. For someone starting out, or buying a first outfit for a child, that removes the part of fishing that puts people off – working out what else you need before you can start.

What you give up at this length is casting distance and the leverage to fight a bigger fish. It is a rod for jetties, creek mouths, small boats, dams and rivers, where you are fishing close in. For beach or rock fishing, or for anything of size, you want a full-length rod – we stock those from 1.8 m upwards.

An honest note: the supplier’s own description for this item repeats the specification of their 1.6 m combo rather than giving figures for the 1.35 m rod, and it does not itemise the 28 pieces. Good to know

Is 1.35 m too short to be useful?

For close-range fishing, no - off a jetty, from a small boat, along a creek or a river bank, you are not casting far anyway. What it will not do is reach out from a beach or give you leverage on a big fish. Buy it for portability, not for distance.

What is in the 28-piece set?

Hooks, swivels, weights, floats and small lures. The supplier does not itemise it and we would rather not guess - ask us and we will open a box in the shop and list exactly what is inside before you buy.

Is it suitable for a child?

It is one of the better first outfits for a child precisely because it is short and light, and because everything needed comes in the box. Supervise any child fishing near water, and mind the hooks.

Can I use it in the sea?

Yes, close in - off a jetty or from a boat inshore. Rinse everything in fresh water afterwards. Salt is much harder on a budget reel than on an expensive one.

Why does the 1.35 m cost more than your 1.6 m combo?

Because this one includes the 28-piece tackle set and the other does not. You are paying for the terminal tackle, not for the rod.

How is this different from your telescopic kits?

The 1.8 m and 2.1 m telescopic kits collapse to 42.5 cm and give you proper casting length. This is shorter overall and comes with more tackle. If length matters more than the tackle box, take a telescopic set.

How should I look after a budget outfit in salt water?

Rinse the rod and reel in fresh water after every session and dry them before storage. A cheap reel will survive years of freshwater use and one season of neglected salt. Put a drop of light oil on the handle knob and bail pivot occasionally and it will last far longer than it cost.
