Highlights

Twenty kilos of drag on a six-foot rod

Slow jigging looks gentle and is not. The blank has to flutter a 300 g jig on the drop and then lift an amberjack off the bottom - which is why this one is rated to 20 kg.

20 kg maximum drag

A serious rating for a rod this size, and what you need when a grouper heads for a hole.

100-350 g jig rating

Covers deep water and hard current, where slow pitch does its best work.

Fuji K-guides, Fuji DPS seat

Alconite rings on K-frames - the tangle-resistant design, on the seat that takes the load.

Torayca Double-X blank

Japanese carbon in a cross-layered construction for torsional stiffness without weight.

About this product

Voyager Slow Jigging Rod – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Slow-pitch jigging is the technique that changed deep-water fishing, and it needs a rod built specifically for it. The action is not a retrieve – it is a rhythm. You lift the rod, the blank loads; you drop the tip, the blank unloads and throws the jig sideways into a flutter; the fish eats it as it falls. A stiff speed-jigging blank cannot do that. A soft rod can flutter a jig but cannot lift the fish afterwards. The whole craft is in getting both into one taper.

Noeby’s Voyager Slow Jigging blank is built on Torayca carbon using their Double-X cross-layered construction, which is about torsional stiffness – stopping the blank twisting when the load comes off-centre, which it constantly does in slow pitch. The action is moderate-fast: a responsive tip that blends into a stiff butt.

Components are the ones that matter. Fuji K-guides with Alconite rings – the K-frame shape sheds a tangled loop of braid instead of trapping it, which on a technique fished with fine PE is worth real money – and a Fuji DPS reel seat on the spinning models.

The M model is rated 100-350 g of jig and PE 2.5-4, with 20 kg of maximum drag. Off this coast that covers the offshore drop-offs and pinnacles, the Mafia channel and the deeper reef edges, where amberjack, grouper, jobfish, snapper and dogtooth tuna all respond to a fluttering jig.

Note that the Voyager line has been retired from Noeby’s current catalogue, so stock is finite.

Questions

Good to know

What is slow-pitch jigging?

A technique where the rod does the work. You lift, the blank loads, and as you drop the tip it unloads and throws the jig into a flutter. The fish eats it on the fall. It is far less physical than speed jigging and often more effective on structure-dwelling fish.

What reel should I use?

A 6000-8000 size spinning reel with a strong, sealed drag and PE 2.5-3 braid. The rod is rated to 20 kg of drag, so pair it with a reel that can actually deliver that - a light reel is the weak link in a slow-pitch outfit.

Where does slow pitch work around Dar es Salaam?

Anywhere with depth and structure: the offshore drop-offs and pinnacles, the Mafia channel, the deep reef edges north and south of the city, and the banks. Grouper, snapper, jobfish, amberjack, kingfish and dogtooth tuna all take slow-pitch jigs here.

What is a 1.5-piece rod?

The blank is one continuous piece and the rear grip separates below the reel seat, so the rod packs shorter without a ferrule in the working part of the blank. It gives you one-piece performance with easier transport.

Why Fuji K-guides specifically?

The K-frame is angled so a loose loop of braid slides off instead of catching. On slow pitch, where the line goes slack on every drop, that is not a luxury - it is what stops you losing a jig and a leader to a wind knot at depth.

Should I buy this or the S581/800?

The VSJ602M-S is a spinning rod at 6 ft with a 100-350 g rating. The S581/800 is 5 ft 8 in, one piece, and built on Toray T1100G with Fuji guides - a shorter, more specialised blank. Both are 20 kg drag rated. Choose the spinning model if you prefer a fixed-spool reel.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the blank, guides and reel seat in fresh water after every trip and dry before storage. Check the guide inserts for chips - slow-pitch rods run fine braid under sudden load, and a chipped ring will cut it. Store the rod flat or hanging, never leaning under tension.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide. Tell us your destination and we will quote transport.
