About this product

Popping and stickbaiting for giant trevally is the hardest use any casting rod gets. You throw a 100 g surface lure a hundred times an hour, a fish hits it at full speed within a rod length of the boat, and then tries to reach coral. Every weak component in the outfit finds out about it in the first two seconds.

Noeby’s Infinite series is their dedicated saltwater performance line, and the Infinite Ocean is the popping and plugging rod in it. It uses Fuji Alconite guides on stainless steel frames and a Fuji heavy-duty reel seat – the two components that matter most, because a bent guide frame or a cracked reel seat ends the day regardless of how good the blank is. At 8 ft 10 in with a regular action, the blank loads through its length rather than just the tip, which is what lets you work a heavy popper without wearing your shoulders out and what cushions the strike so the hooks stay in.

The waters off this coast are exactly what the rod was built for. GT around the reef edges and pinnacles, yellowfin and dogtooth on the drop-offs, and big kingfish and queenfish inshore – all of them take surface lures, and all of them are worth having proper equipment for.

A note on the model code. This rod has been supplied to us as NBP8102H. Noeby’s published Infinite Ocean range lists three models – NBP862MH (8 ft 6 in, MH), NBP862H (8 ft 6 in, H) and NBP8102MH (8 ft 10 in, MH) – so an 8 ft 10 in rod in H power does not appear in their line-up. We have listed the length and build we can confirm and flagged the power rating as needing confirmation, rather than quietly publishing a figure we cannot stand behind. Ask us before ordering and we will confirm exactly which model is in stock.

Good to know

Why does the model code need confirming?

Noeby's published Infinite Ocean range lists NBP862MH, NBP862H and NBP8102MH. An 8 ft 10 in rod in H power is not in that list, so the code we were supplied is either a typo or a regional variant. We would rather tell you than guess. Ask us and we will confirm what is physically in the shop.

What reel should I put on it?

A 14000 to 18000 size saltwater spinning reel with a sealed, high-output drag, loaded with PE 6 to PE 8 braid and a heavy fluorocarbon or mono leader. Popping outfits are only as good as their weakest component.

Where does popping work around Dar es Salaam?

The reef edges and pinnacles offshore, the Mafia channel, around Latham Island and north towards Pemba. GT, yellowfin, dogtooth, kingfish and queenfish all take surface lures here. Early morning over a tide change is the classic window.

Can I use it from shore?

Yes - it is sold as a boat and shore casting rod, and 8 ft 10 in is a usable shore length for throwing big stickbaits off rock ledges. It is heavier work than a shore jigging rod, so most people use it from a boat.

What lures does it throw?

Poppers and stickbaits up to around 100 g. That covers most of the GT lures sold here. Below about 40 g the blank will not load properly.

Why does the guide frame material matter so much?

Because a GT will pull a rod down hard against the gunwale and a soft aluminium frame bends, which then cuts braid. Stainless frames with Alconite rings are the standard specification for popping rods for exactly this reason.

How do I look after it here?

Rinse the blank, guides, ferrules and reel seat in fresh water after every session and dry it before storage. Salt in a ferrule is what makes a multi-piece rod stick, and salt in a reel-seat thread is what seizes it. Check guide inserts for chips - a chipped ring cuts braid under load.
