About this product

Most families end up wanting one boat rather than two, and this is that boat: 3.6 metres long, 88 cm wide, with two moulded seat wells and a third position between them. Two adults paddle it comfortably, a child sits in the middle, and there is still deck space for a cool box.

Length is what makes a tandem worth having. At 3.6 m the hull holds a straight line between strokes instead of wandering, and it carries a load without settling deep in the water. The 88 cm beam means it stays steady while people climb aboard, swap seats or lean over to swim – which is what actually happens on a family paddle, as opposed to what the brochure photograph shows.

The hull is rotomoulded from LLDPE polyethylene as a single piece. There are no joins to leak, nothing to delaminate, and scratches from beaching it are cosmetic. Being a sit-on-top, the deck drains itself through scupper holes and nobody is enclosed in a cockpit, so getting back aboard after a swim is straightforward. Carry handles are moulded into the bow, stern and sides.

It is a substantial boat at around 50 kg, which is the trade-off for the room. Plan on two people to carry it and a proper roof rack or a trailer to move it, and a kayak trolley is a worthwhile accessory if you have any distance between your vehicle and the water.

Good to know

Can three adults really paddle it?

Two adults paddling with a child or a light third person between them is the realistic load. Three full-sized adults will fit on the deck but the boat will sit low and paddle slowly. The supplier has not published a load figure for this hull, so we would rather say that plainly than quote a number we cannot stand behind - ask us if you are planning to load it heavily.

How many paddles come with it?

Paddles are not listed as included with this hull. Tell us how many you need when you order and we will quote them with the boat.

How heavy is it to move?

Around 50 kg, so two people to carry it and a decent roof rack or trailer to transport it. If you have any walk from the car park to the water, buy a kayak trolley - it turns a two-person struggle into a one-person job.

Where can I use it around Dar es Salaam?

Lagoons inside the reef, the creeks and mangrove channels around Kunduchi, Mbweni and Kigamboni, and inland on Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and calm river stretches. Settled conditions only - a loaded family kayak is not an open-ocean boat.

Is it stable enough for children?

Yes - 88 cm of beam on a 3.6 m hull is a very steady platform, and a sit-on-top has no cockpit to trap anyone. Every child aboard should still wear a properly fitted buoyancy aid, which we stock.

How do I look after a plastic kayak in this climate?

Rinse it with fresh water after sea use and store it out of direct sun - under a tree, in a store room, or under a cover. Polyethylene is tough but constant equatorial UV eventually makes the surface chalky and brittle. Store it on its side or hanging, never resting on its hull in the sun, which lets the flat of the hull deform.

Can I fish from it?

Comfortably. There is deck room for two anglers and a cool box, and the hull is stable enough to cast and land fish from. Rod holders and an anchor trolley can be fitted - ask us about those.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, though at 3.6 m this needs proper transport. Tell us where you are and we will confirm options and cost before you order.
