The adjustment is the feature that matters. Children’s feet grow fast enough that a fixed-size skate is often outgrown within a season, which makes it an expensive way to find out whether a child actually enjoys skating. A boot that extends over several sizes turns that into a purchase that lasts two or three years.
Four wheels in line is the standard beginner and intermediate configuration – more stable fore and aft than a shorter frame, and quicker to learn on than quad skates for most children.
A word about protective gear, because it is not optional. Wrist injuries are far and away the commonest skating injury, for the simple reason that the instinct in a fall is to put your hands out. Wrist guards, a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads should go on the first time and every time. We sell protective sets – ask us and we will size them against the child.
One local note: keep the bearings away from sand. Coastal sand works into a skate bearing and grinds the races, and once that has happened the wheel never spins freely again. Wipe them down after every session.
