All-Terrain Skateboard - Big

Skating

An all-terrain skateboard on a ten-ply cross-laminated Canadian maple deck, in the big size. Larger soft wheels are what make it usable here - they deform around rough tarmac and murram instead of stopping dead on every pebble the way a street wheel does.

Highlights

Why soft wheels matter here

A street board is unrideable on a Tanzanian surface.

Ten-ply Canadian maple

Cross-laminated so the deck springs back rather than taking a set or cracking.

Soft wheels for rough ground

They absorb surface texture instead of stopping dead on it. A street wheel here is unrideable.

Keep it dry

Water delaminates a deck and rusts bearings, and neither damage is reversible.

Wear the wrist guards

The commonest skateboard injury, because hands go out in every fall.

About this product

All Terrain Skateboard Big – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

An all-terrain skateboard on a ten-ply Canadian maple deck – this is the larger deck, which is more stable at speed and more comfortable over distance, and suits a bigger rider or a longer commute.

All-terrain, in practice, means larger and softer wheels than a street skateboard. That single change is what makes a board usable on Tanzanian surfaces. A hard street wheel is designed for smooth concrete parks; on rough tarmac or murram it stops dead on every pebble and transmits every crack straight into your feet. A soft wheel deforms around the surface texture and keeps rolling.

The deck is ten plies of Canadian maple, cross-laminated so each layer’s grain runs at an angle to the next. That construction is why a skateboard deck flexes and springs back thousands of times without taking a permanent set, and why it survives being landed on.

Two practical points for riding here. Keep it dry – water gets into the deck laminations and into the bearings, and neither is reversible. A delaminated deck is finished and a rusted bearing never runs smoothly again. And keep the bearings out of coastal sand, which grinds the races.

Protective gear is not optional, particularly the wrist guards – hands go out in every fall, and the whole force of it arrives at one small joint. We sell helmets and pad sets separately.

Questions

Good to know

Why ten-ply maple?

Because a skateboard deck flexes and returns thousands of times in its life and then gets landed on hard. Cross-laminated maple veneers - each layer with its grain at an angle to the next - give a deck that springs back rather than taking a set, and that resists the cracking a solid board would develop.

What does all-terrain mean here?

Larger, softer wheels than a street board. Soft wheels absorb surface texture instead of stopping dead on it, which is what lets a board roll over rough tarmac, murram and cracks. A hard street wheel on a Dar pavement is genuinely unrideable.

Which size should I choose?

Broadly, the smaller board is easier to turn and easier for a smaller or lighter rider to control; the larger one is more stable at speed and more comfortable for a bigger rider or longer distances. If it is for a child, smaller. If it is for commuting across a compound or campus, larger.

Does it need any setting up?

Check the truck bolts and the axle nuts before the first ride and periodically afterwards - vibration works them loose. Truck tightness is a preference: looser turns more sharply and feels unstable, tighter is more stable and turns less. Start tighter and loosen gradually.

What protective gear do I need?

Helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads. Wrist injuries are the commonest skateboarding injury because hands go out in a fall. We sell protective sets and helmets separately - ask us.

How do I look after it here?

Keep it dry. Water gets into the deck laminations and into the bearings, and both are permanent damage - a delaminated deck is finished and a rusted bearing never runs smoothly again. Never leave a board out in the rains or ride through puddles, and keep the bearings out of coastal sand.

Where is safe to ride?

Smooth, flat and away from traffic - a compound, a campus, a car park at the weekend. Tanzanian road surfaces are broken enough that even an all-terrain board finds them hard work, and the traffic does not expect a skateboard.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
