Learning any wheeled sport means falling, repeatedly, at low speed. What protective gear does is not so much prevent serious injury – though it does that too – as remove the sting from the ordinary falls, and that is what determines whether a child gets back up and carries on or decides they do not like skating.

Wrist guards are the most important single piece. Wrist injuries are the commonest injury in skating and skateboarding because the instinct in a fall is to put your hands out, and the entire force arrives at one small joint. A rigid splint along the palm spreads that force up the forearm.

Knee and elbow pads handle the low-speed slides that make up most learning falls, turning what would be a painful graze into nothing.

Which piece matters most?

The wrist guards, without question. Wrist injuries are the commonest skating and skateboarding injury by a wide margin, because the instinct in any fall is to put your hands out. A wrist guard puts a rigid splint along the palm so the force spreads rather than concentrating on the joint.

How should pads fit?

Snug enough not to rotate when the child moves, loose enough not to restrict circulation. A knee pad that slides round the leg on impact is a pad that was not there. Check the straps every session - children pull them looser as the day goes on.

Do they need a helmet as well?

Yes, and it is the one piece this set does not replace. Pads prevent grazes and fractures; a helmet is about the head. We sell helmets separately - ask us and we will size one against the child.

Will a child actually wear them?

How do I keep them from smelling in this heat?

Take them out of the bag rather than leaving them in it, and let them air properly after every session. Hand-wash the straps and shells with mild soap every few weeks and dry them out of direct sun. Sweat-soaked padding in Dar humidity turns unpleasant quickly.

Do pads wear out?

The shells scuff and eventually crack, and the straps lose their grip - both are reasons to replace. A cracked shell no longer spreads impact, which is its only job. Check them at the start of each season.

What surfaces are safest to learn on?

Flat, smooth and closed to traffic. A compound driveway, an empty car park at the weekend or a school hall. Broken road surfaces cause the falls that the pads then have to deal with.
