About this product

Cassette stoves are the most practical camping stoves in Tanzania for one reason: you can buy the gas anywhere. The problem has always been that they are the size and weight of a briefcase. This Naturehike model solves that – it runs exactly the same butane cassette cans, but the stove itself is 24.5 x 18.5 x 9 cm and weighs 892 g.

Output is around 2.2 kW, which brings a pot of water to the boil in roughly three minutes. That is real cooking power rather than a token flame, and it makes this a stove you can genuinely run a camp kitchen on rather than a novelty. The body is cold-rolled steel with a 210 stainless burner head, so the part that takes the heat is the part built for it.

Two design details are worth knowing about. The canister fits by magnetic attachment, which means it clips into place in one movement instead of the fiddly lever arrangement on older cassette stoves. And there is overpressure protection in the fitting, which cuts the gas supply if pressure inside the can rises – the safety feature that matters most on a cassette stove, particularly when one is used in direct sun on a hot Dar es Salaam afternoon.

It suits vehicle camping, beach trips, a small kitchen, or keeping ready at home for the days the power goes. It comes with a storage bag at 29 x 24 x 13 cm. Do not use it in a closed room – like any gas stove, it needs ventilation.

Which gas does it use?

Standard long butane cassette canisters - the same cans sold in supermarkets across Tanzania for ordinary cassette stoves. That is the main reason to choose this stove over a threaded-canister one: you can refuel anywhere.

Is a gas canister included?

No. We stock cassette canisters separately in Dar es Salaam, and they are widely available upcountry too.

What does the overpressure protection do?

It cuts the gas supply if pressure inside the canister rises beyond a safe level - for example if the can gets too hot in direct sun or too close to another flame. It is the single most important safety feature on any cassette stove.

Can I use it indoors during a power cut?

Only in a well-ventilated space with a window or door open. Burning gas consumes oxygen and produces carbon monoxide. Never use it in a closed room or a bathroom.

How does it compare with an ordinary cassette stove?

It runs the same fuel with similar power, but it is roughly a third the size and weight. If the stove lives in a kitchen cupboard, size may not matter; if it travels, this is the one to carry.

How long does one canister last?

Typically a few hours of cooking depending on the flame setting. Most people carry a spare - they are cheap and take up little room.

Can I use a large sufuria on it?

It handles normal pots comfortably. A very large or heavy sufuria overhangs the supports and is safer on a full-size stove. Keep the pot centred and the stove on a firm, level surface.

Do you deliver upcountry?
