Highlights

Feeds eight, folds to 6.5 cm

A 40 x 21 cm stainless grate over an enamelled charcoal basin, on a frame that collapses flat enough to carry like a briefcase.

40 x 21 cm cooking area

Enough grate for four to eight people at a time, so nyama choma for a group does not turn into cooking in shifts.

Folds to 6.5 cm thick

Collapses to a flat 50.2 x 36.5 cm slab that slides behind a seat or down the side of a boot.

Enamelled charcoal basin

Oil and fat wipe off a smooth enamel surface rather than baking onto bare steel, which is what makes cleaning it bearable.

Ventilation on all four sides

Air reaches the coals from every direction, so charcoal burns hot and even instead of smouldering on one side.

Product description

About this product

The question with any portable grill is whether it is big enough to be useful and small enough to actually take with you. This one sits in the right place on both counts: the grate measures 40 x 21 cm, which feeds four to eight people in one go, and the whole thing folds to 50.2 x 36.5 x 6.5 cm – a flat slab you carry by the handle like a briefcase.

The body is SPCC cold-rolled steel with an enamel coating, and the enamel is the part that earns its keep. Fat and oil wipe off a smooth enamelled basin; on bare steel they bake on and stay there. Ventilation runs along all four sides of the basin so air reaches the coals from every direction, which keeps charcoal burning hot and evenly rather than glowing on one edge while the other side smoulders. The grate itself is 430 stainless steel, and the handles are rubber wood – warm to hold rather than the scalding metal you find on cheaper folding grills.

At about 4.1 kg it is substantial enough to stand steady on a camp table or the ground, without being something you dread loading into the car. Set up it stands 50.2 x 32.8 x 33.5 cm, a comfortable height for a table-top braai.

It suits camping in Mikumi or Ruaha, a beach afternoon at Kigamboni or Bagamoyo, a fishing trip, or a small terrace in Dar es Salaam where a fixed braai would not fit. It burns ordinary charcoal, so fuel is never the problem.

Questions

Good to know

How many people does it feed?

The 40 x 21 cm grate handles four to eight people at a time, so a family or a small group is covered without cooking in shifts.

Does it burn charcoal or gas?

Charcoal. Ordinary mkaa is exactly what it is built for, and the four-sided ventilation is what keeps it burning hot.

How flat does it fold?

To 6.5 cm thick, at 50.2 x 36.5 cm - a flat slab that slides behind a car seat or down the side of a boot. That is the main reason people choose this over a fixed braai.

Is it hard to clean?

Less than most. The enamel coating on the basin means oil and fat wipe off with a cloth rather than baking onto bare metal. Brush the stainless grate while it is still warm.

Can I use it on a wooden table?

Not directly. It gets hot underneath, as any charcoal grill does. Put it on a stone or metal surface, a paving slab, or the ground, with clearance around it.

Will the enamel chip?

Enamel chips if it is knocked hard against something. Carry it in the folded position rather than loose in a boot with heavy gear and it stays intact.

Is it stable on sand?

On firm sand it stands well. On loose beach sand, press the feet in until they bed or set it on a board - do not leave a loaded grill on a slope.

Can I use it on a balcony in Dar es Salaam?

Many people do, given how little space it takes folded. Use it in open air with clearance above and around, never in an enclosed room - charcoal produces carbon monoxide.

Where do these figures come from?

The measurements, weights and output figures on this page come from the supplier's own documentation rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. If a particular figure matters to you, ask us and we will check the item in the Dar es Salaam showroom before you buy.
